    Attorney at Law

Been looking for a law office software application that would make practicing law much easier? Trying to convince the senior partner to computerize the firm with easy-to-use Macintoshes? Tired of being told by Windows users that there is no law office software available for the Macintosh? Then this site is for you! There are actually a large number of excellent software tools for law office use written for the Macintosh. These software tools tend to be superior to those available for Windows. This site is dedicated to providing you with basic information about all of the software tools written specifically for law office use for the Macintosh. (Please note: this site is NOT necessarily a resource for finding the best general purpose applications for law office use. In other words, you will not find any discussion here about which word processor to use, which hard drive formatter to use, which fax software is best, etc. I leave that in the very capable hands of your local Macintosh user groups and the monthly Macintosh magazines.)

Missing network connectivity after an update? Try this
A few recently released Mac OS X updates including AirPort Extreme Update 2008-001 for Tiger, Safari 3.1 and Time Machine and Airport Update 1.0 can cause problems with network connectivity or an inability to access certain Web sites. Here's one reader's experience: "I also have a problem with my 1,5 Ghz Powerbook 10.5.2 caused by the latest updates (which were: Safari 3.1, Time Machine and Aiport Update 1.0 and Security Update 2008-002 1.0) After I updated it all, I was suddenly unable to connect to the internet anymore." Before attempting to isolate the culpable update or delving into more workarounds, make sure that your DNS settings haven't been inadvertently deleted. Go to the DNS Servers field of the TCP/IP tab of your Internet connection port in Network preferences and make sure the entries appear. If they don't you can usually obtain them from your ISP. Some ISPs that use DHCP to distribute IP addresses to customers prefer not to provide DNS server addresses, with the argument being that DHCP is supposed to provide such information to connected computers automatically. However, in this situation, one solution is to enter them manually, so we encourage readers to be persistent with their ISPs. Apart from the fact that a DNS server address might change in the future, requiring the user to then manually enter the updated address, there are few technical reasons why an ISP shouldn't give its customers the IP addresses of their DNS servers if it's the best solution to a connectivity problem.

    50. Macintosh Logic Board Battery Information
Pages that describe how to recognize the symptoms of and fix a dead battery in macintosh computers.
    http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh/
Welcome To The Macintosh Battery Web Page!
These pages began when I wanted to answer the question - "How do I replace my logic board battery?" (but they also document some other useful or interesting battery information). This question often follows the question - "Why is it that when I boot my Macintosh, the monitor is set to "Black and White" and the date is wrong?" These pages are NOT designed to show the user how to dismantle their computer. A lot of that information has been included and more is being added all the time - but the pages were made possible by my clock-chipping activities. There are other sites that do provide some more of that information; see the links at the bottom of this page. Symptoms The first symptom of this problem is frequently when your desktop Mac does not want to start. This can be a sign that the SoftPower circuit is not getting enough power from the battery to start the Mac (the battery also handles ADB control and the SoftPower circuit). But this is often not recognized as a battery problem. Thanks to Richard Hill for the information about the ADB and SoftPower circuit.

    51. Gene Macintosh Genealogy Software
Shareware genealogy software for macintosh to store family data, print family trees and pedigree charts, and create web pages from database.
    http://www.ics.uci.edu/~eppstein/gene/
    Gene Macintosh Genealogy Software
"The look of this prodigiously likable little shareware item should be the envy of designers of more expensive software."
David Pogue, MacWorld Magazine Four mice! MacUser Magazine Gene is a shareware genealogy database for the Macintosh written by David and Diana Eppstein. You can use Gene to store family data and notes, draw and print family trees and pedigree charts, create web pages from your database, and exchange GEDCOM data with users of other genealogy programs. Gene is capable of handling complicated databases with thousands of names, multiple marriages and divorces, adoptions, illegitimate children, and intermarriage between relatives. OS X NEWS: As of November 2003, coding is in progress on a rewrite of BibGene, a simpler bibliographic database that shares most of its code with Gene. Most of the back end database processing is in place, we have a tentative UI design, and front end implementation is beginning: everything on the File menu works (reading and writing multiple file formats including a new XML format and the old Classic format) but most other UI features are not yet implemented. It is looking likely that a preliminary version of BibGene will be ready for release by the end of the year. Gene will take some time longer than that, because it includes some more complex features (pictures and tree drawing) not used in BibGene. In the meantime, Gene still runs well under the Classic environment of OS X, but Gene and BibGene are the only classic programs I still use regularly so I am quite interested in getting them updated. Stay tuned...

Shorten for Macintosh has a graphical user interface and also contains the md5sum checksum utility which can be used to verify file integrity.
