The intent of this application is to address the most common issues facing an STD program in its efforts to manage the data that it receives from labs, providers, clinics, disease intervention specialists (DIS), etc. Additionally, a mechanism is provided so that non-named case morbidity data, in electronic format, can be transmitted to CDC via the National Electronic Telecommunications System for Surveillance (NETSS). Adoption of STD*MIS by State and local health departments is voluntary. If the software can be useful, and is implemented by a State or local health department, it becomes, in essence, a local application. The Division of STD Prevention provides source code for the system as well as basic support. Basic support primarily involves training of the staff who will be supporting the application locally and serving as technical back-up for these local support staff. More extensive support is the responsibility of the STD project area. STD*MIS was developed using xBase++ and supports Foxpro 3.x and Advantage Database Server database formats.

November 2, 2004 Bush Misleads on Supporting Troops On the campaign trail, Bush has repeatedly presented himself as the candidate who will unquestioningly provide American troops with the resources they need. At a last minute stop in Dallas yesterday, Bush said "there's nothing complicated about supporting our troops in combat." But there is mounting evidence that Bush sent troops to war without essential equipment. A recent investigation by 60 Minutes found "a lack of armored vehicles, field radios, night vision goggles, and even ammunition especially for the National Guard and reserve units that now make up more than 40 percent of U.S. troops." Even though half of the injuries and deaths suffered by U.S. forces are the result of roadside bombs "the U.S. military still lacks thousands of fully armored vehicles that could save American lives." Part of the problem is that "most of the vehicles in Iraq arrived there without armor plating, because the Pentagon war planners didn't anticipate a long, bloody insurgency." An audiovisual performance by Golan Levin and Zachary Lieberman Developed April 2004 HAND-FORMS IN HYBRID LIGHT The Manual Input Sessions is a series of audiovisual vignettes which probe the expressive possibilities of hand gestures and finger movements. Our concert is performed on a combination of custom interactive software, analog overhead projectors and digital computer video projectors. The analog and digital projectors are aligned such that their projections overlap, resulting in an unusual quality of hybridized, dynamic light. During the performance, a computer vision system analyses the sihouettes of the performers� hands as they scribble on transparencies, and move across the glass tops of the overhead projectors. The hand gestures and transparency drawings are then analysed by our custom software. In response, our software generates synthetic graphics and sounds that are tightly coupled to the forms and movements of the performers� actions.
