March 19th, 2008 HT: Randall Buth on Evang Text Crit blog There is an interesting article on the University of Vienna site regarding a recent archaeological find. Archaeologists from the Institute of Prehistory and Early History of the University of Vienna have found an amulet inscribed with a Jewish prayer in a Roman child’s grave dating back to the 3rd century CE at a burial ground in the Austrian town of Halbturn. The 2.2-centimeter-long gold scroll represents the earliest sign of Jewish inhabitants in present-day Austria. The inscription, which though written in Greek letters, is really only a direct transliteration of the Hebrew text of the Shema (Dt 6:4) The inscription on the amulet is a Jewish prayer

Specimens in the U.S. National Fungus Collections
. The U.S. National Fungus Collections (BPI) are the repository for over one million fungal specimens worldwide and are the largest such collections in the world. Information associated with these specimens constitute an enormous data resource, especially about plant-associated fungi. Data from the labels ofmore than750,000of the specimens have been entered into a database. These labels have information on the host on which the fungus was found and the locality in which the specimen was collected. Sixty percent of these specimens are from the United States and thus represent a large body of information about the fungi in this country. Data entry has been completed for the Uredinales (rusts), the Ustilaginales (smuts), the Polyporales (polypores), the Deuteromycetes (imperfect fungi), the Ascomycetes, and the C.G. Lloyd collections. Recent progress has been made in the computerization of specimens of the agarics and the"lower" fungi including the Oomycetes and Chytridiomycetes. Fungus-Host Distributions . This database includes reports of fungi on vascular plants and plant products according to their distribution by state (for the U.S.) and country taken from over 12,000 literature sources. Currently the database contains 78,000 fungal taxa on 54,000 vascular plant hosts representing 310,000 unique host-fungus combinations. Over 300 countries and territories are included. Records are continuously added as new publications are received. This database was used to produce the book

e-Catena: Compiled Allusions to the NT in the Ante-Nicene Fathers
Dedicated to the transcribers and translators who made it possible. Medieval scholars including Aquinas compiled references from the Church Fathers in order to illuminate scripture in collections called catenae , from the Latin for "chains" or "links." In modern terms, a catena is a hypertext. Since the footnotes of the public domain Ante-Nicene Fathers already contain information on allusions to biblical passages, the opportunity was there to take that information and format it so that the patristic references follow the canonical order. This invited a software solution. The fourteen hundred line program was coded in a 13-hour stint on one Sunday in September of 2002. Amazingly, it worked. Several uses for catenae can be imagined, especially for scholarship. First, text critics can easily refer to the locations in the early Church Fathers in which certain passages are cited. The English translation of the patristic texts can indicate textual variations to be verified by consulting a critical edition. Second, exegetes can use the comments made by the patristic authors in determining the sense of the passage or the way in which it could be taken. Third, patristic scholars gain a helpful tool for analysing how various Church Fathers interpreted the New Testament, which may shed light on the development of doctrine and practice in early Christianity. PortTalk - A Windows NT I/O Port Device Driver
Accessing I/O Ports in protected mode is governed by two events, The I/O privilege level (IOPL) in the EFLAGS register and the I/O permission bit map of a Task State Segment (TSS). The I/O permission bitmap can be used to allow programs not privileged enough (I.e. usermode programs) the ability to access the I/O ports. When an I/O instruction is executed, the processor will first check if the task is privileged enough to access the ports. Should this be the case, the I/O instruction will be executed. However if the task is not allowed to do I/O, the processor will then check the I/O permission bitmap. The I/O permission bitmap, as the name suggests uses a single bit to represent each I/O address. If the bit corresponding to a port is set, then the instruction will generate an exception however if the bit is clear then the I/O operation will proceed. This gives a means to allow certain processes to access certain ports. There is one I/O permission bitmap per task. Accessing I/O Ports under NT/2000/XP There are two solutions to solving the problem of I/O access under Windows NT. The first solution is to write a device driver which runs in ring (I/O privilege level 0) to access your I/O ports on your behalf. Data can be passed to and from your usermode program to the device driver via IOCTL calls. The driver can then execute your I/O instructions. The problem with this, is that it assumes you have the source code to make such a change.

Microsoft has come out with a number of benchmarks and comparison papers championing the fact that Windowsnt is much better than Linux.
    http://www.oualline.com/col/cpm.html
    Windows-NT vs. CP/M
Microsoft has come out with a number of benchmarks and comparison papers championing the fact that Windows-NT is much better than Linux. I find such comparisons fascinating, but rather than rehash this argument, I've decided to create my own comparison. Not of Windows-NT vs. Linux, that's been done. But of Windows-NT vs. CP/M. CP/M for those of you who don't remember was one of the first portable operating systems. It ran on 8 bit 8080 class hardware, and was a single user, floppy based system. (Later versions actually could access a hard drive.) Two systems were selected for this comparison. The CP/M system is a Kaypro-II running a 2MHZ Z80, with 64K of memory and dual 360K 5-1/4 floppies. The Windows-NT system runs quad 500 MHZ Pentium Processors, with 2GB of memory and 1TB of disk space. This particular configuration was chosen because Microsoft seems to like to use a system like this for all its benchmark comparisons.
    Performance
Performance is one key issue in any comparison. I do a lot of writing, so word processing performance is extremely important to me. The CP/M system with Word* and after a 15 second boot Word* let me write documents as fast as I could type. In my two minute test, I could enter about 210 words. The Windows-NT system running Microsoft Word also could accept input as fast as I could type, but it took a whole minute to boot up. Thus I could enter only 120 words in my test. So we can conclude that CM/P is 75% faster than Windows-NT for word processing.
