Welcome to DEISA
DEISA is a consortium of leading national supercomputing centres that currently deploys and operates a persistent, production quality, distributed supercomputing environment with continental scope. The purpose of this FP6 funded research infrastructure is to enable scientific discovery across a broad spectrum of science and technology, by enhancing and reinforcing European capabilities in the area of high performance computing. This becomes possible through a deep integration of existing national high-end platforms, tightly coupled by a dedicated network and supported by innovative system and grid software. The Leading Source for Global News and Information Covering the Ecosystem of High Productivity Computing / February 29, 2008 Home Page Free Subscription Advertising About HPCwire From the Editor Human-Scale Supercomputing In this issue, I highlighted a recent commentary written by Prof. Hans Werner Meuer, who writes about the 15 year anniversary of the TOP500 project. Meuer did a great job at recounting the history of the list and provided some interesting anecdotes of his favorite machines. Although in the past, I've offered criticism of the list, in the feature article I focused on some of the more practical aspects of the TOP500 project that Meuer discusses. That includes using the list as a historical record for tracking the evolution of high performance computing over the last decade and a half, and to project its future. One of the more positive effects of the TOP500 project and one that Meuer doesn't mention is that it helps to popularize the notion of supercomputing to the wider industry and maybe more importantly, to the general public. While this might seem superficial, the twice yearly list at least provides valuable PR for the almost invisible HPC community. Save for the occasional article in the mainstream media about how supercomputers have predicted climate changes or discovered some mystery of the universe, most of HPC is hidden from public view. The missing element in most stories about supercomputers is how they relate to the human condition at the scale of the individual. It's not that climate modeling, derivative pricing or seismic simulations are not worthwhile applications. But linking supercomputing to personal applications would inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers.

GPGPU stands for General-Purpose computation on GPUs . With the increasing programmability of commodity graphics processing units (GPUs), these chips are capable of performing more than the specific graphics computations for which they were designed. They are now capable coprocessors, and their high speed makes them useful for a variety of applications. The goal of this page is to catalog the current and historical use of GPUs for general-purpose computation. Contribute

Faster than a speeding bullet… Tags: supercomputing blue gene petaflop ibm By Gemma Simpson Published: 20 November 11:00 GMT var url_base = "/js/ukn/"; document.write("" + "" + "Show related " + "articles"); Supercomputing? Is that just a PC wearing a cape and its underpants over its keyboard?
No, a supercomputer is a computer which is considered to be at the frontline in terms of processing capacity and speed. So what makes a computer super?
Well, it's all about speed, with the fastest computers being labelled as supercomputers. But the term supercomputing is rather fluid, with the supercomputers of today often becoming the common-or-garden computers of tomorrow. At any given time, there are usually a few well-publicised supercomputers that operate at incredible speeds. IBM once again dominated the semi-annual supercomputer rankings , with its Blue Gene/L topping the supercomputer pops.

K-means clustering algorithm, used for data mining, developed in MATLAB and accelerated with Star-P. When a natural calamity strikes without warning, detailed information is needed immediately by emergency responders as well as the public. Seismic researchers, for example, may be able to quickly disseminate statistics such as the epicenter, size, and scope of an earthquake. But additional critical analysis and modeling can take hours, days, even weeks to accomplish.
SPICE-based circuit simulation, parallelized with Star-P from Interactive Supercomputing. Priority for Emergencies
Because of increasing interest in the different use models mentioned above, the San Diego Supercomputer Center has dedicated a Dell cluster with 64 Intel dual-socket, dual-core compute nodes for a total of 256 processors for urgent computing calculations to any U.S.-based researcher. The 2.33GHz, four-way nodes have 8GB of memory. When not in use for urgent computing, the system can be used for calculations that can be interrupted at any time. A number of key technical developments have emerged to make on-demand computing very effective in a production environment.

    Supercomputing Overview
Since its inception in 1998 the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing has run a supercomputing facility on behalf of Swinburne University of Technology. Originally a linux beowulf cluster the supercomputer has now evolved into a fully-integrated rack-mounted system with a theoretical peak speed in excess of 10 Tflops (10 trillion floating point operations per second). The supercomputer has proven to be an excellent research tool in areas of astronomy ranging from simulations of structure formation in the Universe to the processing of data collected from radio telescopes. It is also used by CAS staff to render content for 3-D animations and movies. More generally, the supercomputer is available for use by Swinburne University researchers and their collaborators.
