Using VBScript to Automate Tasks

Total article views: 92511 Views in the last 30 days: 3768 Rate this Join the discussion Briefcase The key to maintain a smooth, efficient SQL Server environment is to be proactive. We need to constantly look for ways to tighten and harden SQL servers and improve performances. Using proactive monitoring, when we see any signs of abnormal behavior, we will investigate and see what the real problem is. We will find a problem and solve it before a problem finds us. We can nip the problem in the bud, so to speak. A key component of proactive monitoring is automation. If we can automate a lot of routine tasks, we will have time to focus on more important issues. In addition, automation also frees up time for you as a busy DBA, so you can learn new things and continuously improve yourself. Automation tools available for SQL Server are SQL Server Agent, SQL (Stored Procedures), DTS, ActiveX scripts (VBScript), SQL Server command line tools (OSQL/ISQL), DOS command batch files, WMI, SQL Mail, to name just a few. They all have their pluses and minuses. Depending on the situation, one method might be better suited than others. In this article, I will give you a very brief introduction of VBScript. I will then provide you with a couple of examples of using VBScript to automate file deletion and FTPing files. Hopefully they can give you some ideas on where and how to use VBScript. Both examples can be modified and put into use easily.

Difficulty: Beginner Requires: ASP Demo: Download: lesson5.zip Summary: A easy intro to VBScript. Intro: VBScript is the default scripting language for ASP, and most of the materials published here are things scripted in VBScript. VBScript is a light version of Visual Basic, and has an easy syntax. Variables: You don't have to explicitly declare your variables before use in VBScript, and all variables is the same type (variant). My first ASP page: MyVar = "Hello world!" This page displays the word Hello world! Click here to see it. What I do is assigning the text Hello world My second ASP page: This time we will add a little FOR loop to the page: MyVar = "Hello world!" This page is just the same as the above. The difference is that it prints Hello world!

Windows 2000 and Windows XP use CDO messaging as a replacement for CDONTS.
Sending email with CDO is a simple task. First we create a reference to the CDO component
Set objMessage = CreateObject("CDO.Message")
then fill-in Sender, Subject and Recipient (To) fields of the headers and the body text which can be either plain text or HTML. You can also add a file attachment. You then use the Send method to send the email.
Below I'll show all three types of emails, and how to send an email using a remote SMTP server in the event you are not running your own. I've added and example to illustrate how to request a return receipt and delivery status notifications. Please note, when using the AddAttachment method in your scripts you must use a fully qualified pathname as the argument to the method. Using just a file name or a relative path will produce the error The specified protocol is unknown If you receive an error message related to objMessage. From

ActiveX and VBScript support in Opera
Opera does not have in-built support for Microsoft's Windows-specific ActiveX technology or the VBScript scripting language.
Running ActiveX controls using the Neptune plug-in
MeadCo produces a plug-in called Neptune , which hosts Microsoft's WebBrowser control What this means is that the Internet Explorer engine can be run within Opera, and this in effect makes it possible to load and run ActiveX components. Note that this only works on Windows, and the same security precautions should be taken as when running ActiveX components in Internet Explorer. Using Neptune in Opera is essentially the same as running Internet Explorer in an Opera window. Neptune is free for use, and even though it is reported to work in Opera, we do not offer official support for it. If you are looking for further help than what is described here, please ask in the My Opera forums

    Introduction: JavaScript vs. VBScript
Alot of people ask me whether I think it makes sense to learn VBScript. While I do answer this question in my note, Why VBScript matters , there is one thing I specifically don't cover in that essay: The great JavaScript vs. VBScript debate. Here's my answer. For most people, the issue of choosing one scripting language over another is moot: They either don't care one way or the other, are not technically astute enough to make the distinction, or just looking at JavaScript and say, hey, why use anything else? JavaScript works on all browsers Fair enough. But I'd put the argument another way: JavaScript is an incredibly difficult language to learn and use correctly. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a Microsoft basher, is a programmer themselves, or is trying to sell you their own JavaScript book (and before you ask, my VBScript book is out of print, so money is not clouding my own thinking on this issue). Because JavaScript is so close to Java, C, C++, Objective C, Perl, and a variety of other languages, one might think that this familiarity will prove to be some sort of advantage. It isn't. As any honest programmer will tell you, these languages are all so similar that the differences will come back and bite you in the butt again and again. In fact, I'd argue that it is JavaScript's similarity to these languages (which are all difficult and hard to learn themselves) that is, in fact, it's biggest weakness.

Generate JSON from VBScript (ASP) datatypes
published on April 26, 2007 by Michal category: AJAX JSON Javascript ajaxed ... classic ASP (VBScript) When working with JSON it's nice to have a generator for your language which transforms all the datatypes from your chosen programming language into the JSON grammar so that you can use them within javascript. For a lot of popular languages it's done already (i suppose) but I haven't found one for classic ASP .. so here it comes. The following example quickly demonstrates what the goal is: PLAIN TEXT ASP:
  • set RS = getRecordset "SELECT * FROM table" response write new JSON toJSON "rows" , RS
  • A simple usage of JSON normally is that you create a page which outputs data as JSON as the only response. This page is called later from another page and the returned data is used within a javascript function (known as callback). So the snippet above gets some data from the database and stores it in an adodb.recordset which is passed then to the JSON generator and the result is printed on the page. The consuming page would like to access the data now as it originally was within the recordset. like this: PLAIN TEXT JAVASCRIPT:
  • function callback rows for i = length ; i++ alert rows i columName
  • read on to get the details...

VBScript Classes: Part 1 of N By Jon M. Gohr In the all too brief moments of down time between projects I like to explore. Lately I've been exploring VBScript classes and have decided to prepare a series of articles which will be presented here on ASP 101 to see if I can help shed a little light on the topic. Don't expect a dissertation on Object Oriented Programming and Design, I'm no expert in the field. If you're interested in that topic, you will find quite a few books available at your favorite online book seller's site, or heaven forbid, out amongst the people at a "real" bookstore. They still exist don't they? The concept of classes/objects can seem very confusing until that light goes off and you "get it". My advice: Don't sweat the details. Use and study them, when they start to make even a little sense go ahead and try to write some. You WILL make mistakes along the way, as long as you learn from the mistakes you have lost nothing!

Part 1: PHP, Javascript and VBScript Language Summary
Submitted by johnlim on Mon, 21/06/2004 - 9:56pm. This is a summary of the language differences between PHP, JScript/Javascript and VBScript that I did to help my company learn the 3 server side scripting languages. Hope it's helpful to others. I started out as an ASP developer, and switched to PHP. I have been using ASP since 1998 (we continue to support our customers who are still using ASP), and PHP since 2000 (our main web development platform). In general, my experience with PHP has been very positive. Here are the nice things i found about PHP:
    • No need to purchase additional ActiveX controls for email, gif manipulation, pdf handling, etc. Batteries included.
    • Runs well on both IIS and Apache, Windows and Linux. Cross-platform power.
    • Good performance. PHP is faster than VBScript and JScript, based on the Bagley benchmarks.
    • Even if you are a VB programmer, provided you have some Javascript experience, you are already half-way up the learning curve, as PHP looks like Javascript with $ signs in front of variables.

      Introduction
Scripting can be a powerful tool. There are a lot well written scripts for use with Exchange floating around the Internet that can be quite useful. Changing to fit your needs is not too difficult, but writing your own scripts and making scripts work better for your needs requires some knowledge of the inner workings of Active Directory, Exchange and of course the scripting language. This article will present a few basic scripting methods. I will explain in great detail both the scripting logic provided by VBScript and that of the interfaces provided by Active Directory.
