This specification defines the generic URI syntax and a process for resolving URI references that might be in relative form, along with guidelines and security considerations for the use of URIs on the Internet. The URI syntax defines a grammar that is a superset of all valid URIs, allowing an implementation to parse the common components of a URI reference without knowing the scheme-specific requirements of every possible identifier. This specification does not define a generative grammar for URIs; that task is performed by the individual specifications of each URI scheme. A Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) provides a simple and extensible means for identifying a resource. This specification of URI syntax and semantics is derived from concepts introduced by the World Wide Web global information initiative, whose use of these identifiers dates from 1990 and is described in "Universal Resource Identifiers in WWW"

XML Tutorial
An XML tutorial, hosted at w3schools.com The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a W3C-recommended general-purpose markup language for creating special-purpose markup languages. It is a simplified subset of SGML, capable of describing many different kinds of data. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the sharing of data across different systems, particularly systems connected via the Internet.
Documentation
XML Introduction
This short article introduces XML and some of its uses.
XML in Mozilla
Mozilla has good support for XML. Several World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Recommendations and drafts from the XML family of specifications are supported, as well as other related technologies.
XML Extras
The XML Extras module contains several features that allow developers to treat XML as data rather than just as just another document format.

Internet Mail Consortium 675 Spruce Dr. Sunnyvale CA US dcrocker@imc.org Demon Internet Ltd. Dorking Business Park Dorking Surrey England UK paulo@turnpike.com ABNF Augmented Backus-Naur Form electronic mail Internet technical specifications often need to define a format syntax and are free to employ whatever notation their authors deem useful. Over the years, a modified version of Backus-Naur Form (BNF), called Augmented BNF (ABNF), has been popular among many Internet specifications. It balances compactness and simplicity, with reasonable representational power. In the early days of the Arpanet, each specification contained its own definition of ABNF. This included the email specifications, RFC733 and then RFC822 which have come to be the common citations for defining ABNF. The current document separates out that definition, to permit selective reference. Predictably, it also provides some modifications and enhancements. The differences between standard BNF and ABNF involve naming rules, repetition, alternatives, order-independence, and value ranges. Appendix A (Core) supplies rule definitions and encoding for a core lexical analyzer of the type common to several Internet specifications. It is provided as a convenience and is otherwise separate from the meta language defined in the body of this document, and separate from its formal status. The name of a rule is simply the name itself; that is, a sequence of characters, beginning with an alphabetic character, and followed by a combination of alphabetics, digits and hyphens (dashes).

This interface offers full XML 1.0 validation facilities. Its only notable deviation from the 1.0 spec comes in its handling of whitespace, which it ignores inside of markup where syntactically irrelevant. Note, though, that this deviation from the spec has nothing to do with the hotly debated issue of whitespace in actual character data (in which respect this validator follows the spec). To use this interface to validate a small XML document, paste the document in question into the

XML Namespaces
James Clark
The XML Namespaces Recommendation seems to be causing a great deal of confusion. This note attempts an alternative explanation of the mechanism described in the Recommendation which I hope will be less confusing. In the data model implied by XML, an XML document contains a tree of elements. Each element has an element type name (sometimes called the tag name) and a set of attributes; each attribute consists of a name and a value. Applications typically make use of the element type name and attributes of an element in determining how to process the element. In XML 1.0 without namespaces, element type names and attribute names are unstructured strings using a restricted set of characters, similar to identifiers in programming languages. I'll call these names local names. This is problematic in a distributed environment like the Web. One XML document may use part elements to describe parts of books, another may use part elements to describe parts of cars. An XML application has no way of knowing how to process a part element unless it has some additional information external to the document.

XML Paper Specification: Overview
The XML Paper Specification (XPS) provides users and developers with a robust, open and trustworthy format for electronic paper. The XML Paper Specification describes electronic paper in a way that can be read by hardware, read by software, and read by people. XPS documents print better, can be shared easier, are more secure and can be archived with confidence. The XML Paper Specification itself is platform independent, openly published, and available royalty-free and Microsoft has integrated XPS-based technologies into Microsoft Windows Vista operating system and the 2007 Microsoft Office system. Microsoft brings additional document value to its customers, partners, and the computing industry through the XPS-based technologies.
