SEGH Info
SEGH was established in 1971 to provide a forum for scientists from various disciplines to work together in understanding the interaction between the geochemical environment and the health of plants, animals, and humans. SEGH recognizes the importance of interdisciplinary research. SEGH members represent expertise in a diverse range of scientific fields, such as biology, engineering, geology, hydrology, epidemiology, chemistry, medicine, nutrition, and toxicology. SEGH members represent these areas of expertise within the academic, regulatory, and industrial communities, thus providing a representative perspective on current issues and concerns. SEGH membership is international and there are regional sections to coordinate activities in Europe and the Asia/ Pacific.

Geochemists investigate the distribution and quantities of chemical elements, their compounds, and their isotopes throughout the earth, including its crust, waters, and atmosphere. They also seek the natural processes that produced such a distribution.

Geochemistry Research Group
Geochemistry comprises more than 30 researchers and post-graduate students who apply state of the art geochemical analysis and modelling to scientific questions of major societal, economic and environmental importance. Our research can be divided into two linked themes:
  • Quantifying geochemical exchanges between Earth reservoirs: What processes control the transfer of material between the Earth's oceans, mantle, solid crust, sedimentary blankets, atmosphere, and biota and how have these processes changed throughout Earth history?
  • Geochemistry for Society: How can we quantify, forecast, and mitigate the effects of climate change, pollution, global consumption, and geohazards on human health, the environment, and the sustainable use of natural resources?
Strengths include:
  • Ultra-low level Trace Element Analyses
  • Radiogenic Isotope Geochemistry and Geochronology
  • Fluid and Volatile Analysis
  • Environmental Radiochemistry
  • Biomineralization
  • Speciation and Reaction Modelling
  • Analytical technique development and refinement

This research includes detailed field investigations, laboratory studies, development of reactive barriers and other passive remedial solutions, and development of mathematical models to predict the complex geochemical behavior of these systems. We have conducted detailed investigations of mine sites, mine-waste disposal facilities, wetlands, on-site sewage disposal systems and other industrial sites. Laboratory studies often focus on reaction mechanisms utilizing batch and column experiments. Mathematical modelling has focused on the development of fully-coupled reactive transport codes that can account for thermodynamic and kinetic controls on chemical reactions between groundwater and the aquifer material. Remediation research is focused on the development of passive, in situ , methods including permeable reactive barriers.

Main Page On these pages the laboratory methods used by the marine geochemistry group of the Department of Geosciences in the University of Bremen are described. These pages are currently in their juvenile stage, so please do not hesitate to mail alternative methods, errors, references or useful links. The main objective of the current marine investigations are both porewater and solid phase analysis of sediment material recovered during several cruises with the research vessel METEOR . Published data from these cruises may be accessed through the PANGAEA database system. In our group, modelling of porewater and sediment interactions and diffusive processes is performed using CoTReM a computer software created for the simulation of one-dimensional transport of solutes and solid phases and their interactions driven by bio-geochemical reactions and thermodynamic equilibria occurring in natural environments.
