Data is gathered using tools such as satellites, air and sea borne sensors, and ground based instruments. Data are then manipulated and analyzed using advanced computer systems. Geomatics students learn how the Earth is measured, how the Earth-based data is analyzed and how this data is integrated into forms and systems that people can use. Students gain hands-on experience working with field equipment and in high tech classrooms. The Geomatics major at UF is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ( ABET ) and is the only program of its kind in the state.

Mission: As part of Cook College's Campus Green Initiative ( http://aesop.rutgers.edu/~enviro ), the Spring 2003 Advanced Environmental Geomatics (Instructor: Professor Richard Lathrop) undertook to examine issues related to the campus green infrastructure. The goal of this years course was the identification and assessment of environmentally significant areas, what we term green infrastructure, on the Cook-Douglass campus. Using geomatics technology (remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and global position systems (GPS)), the students mapped the Cook-Douglass campus complemented with field surveys to document important natural habitat areas and characterize their significant features. GIS-based projects were undertaken to assess watershed integrity, aesthetic viewsheds, vegetation diversity, environmental corridors and .desire. paths.
Class Format: This class was taught in a practicum format with an emphasis on student-driven learning through practical hands-on individual and group projects. To meet this objective, student teams identified the issues to be studied, broke into teams by issue, and undertook field and GIS studies. The class used various forms of information technology (e.g., geomatics and web technology) to develop and communicate the resulting study, culminating in a web-based product and a public presentation of the results. Qualitative Geomatics for Sustainable Development
    Geoffrey Edwards
    Abstract
    1) Introduction
Geomatics technologies are presently limited in their application scope. They are used when precise information is available or is needed for visual purposes. In general, today's geomatics tools are poor at handling less precise information. In a sense, they assume too much precision. More than a decade of research has been devoted to the development of geomatics methods and technologies that are more expressive for spatial information that is qualitative in nature. As a result, a number of lines of inquiry are yielding new methods that should support more effectively qualitative spatial descriptions of the world, and qualitative analysis. In this paper, some of these lines of inquiry are presented along with the new tools that are becoming available.
    2) New tools for qualitative spatial representation and analysis
    2.1 Qualitative spatial reasoning (QSR)
Qualitative spatial reasoning is an area of intense interest and research in computer science over the past several decades. The domain is concerned with conceptual frameworks for spatial reasoning, with formal methods of reasoning, and with logics and calculi. Also, qualitative spatial reasoning is strongly linked to the efforts to formalise ontologies (Bittner and Edwards 2000). Likewise, qualitative spatial reasoning overlaps with work in computational linguistics aimed at supporting language-based spatial reasoning (Edwards

      The Program
Geomatics Technology is an exciting field that offers the student the ability to use the latest technology in the office and outdoors in a small class environment. Geomatics Technology uses modern ground aerial and satellite technologies and computers for data processing.
The demand for surveyors has never been greater and the new Geomatics Technology program at Idaho State University offers students several ways to get into this exciting and rewarding field. First, you can test the waters by enrolling in the two-year Civil Engineering Technology program and get the field skills you need to get a job. Continue classes for the next two years, earn a bachelor in science degree, and get the advanced education and training that you need to work at the professional level. You may also pursue registration as a Professional Land Surveyor, or start your academic career directly in the B.S. program.
We offer small class sizes that emphasize actual project work both in the field and in the office. You'll enter the profession with the education and skills that you need to succeed.
