Meteorology
Meteorology is the scientific study of the atmosphere and weather.
A person who studies the weather is called a meteorologist.
Meteorologists use many different tools to learn about the weather in the world.
To learn more about some of the instruments that meteorologists use to measure the weather, follow this link to Weather Instruments Meteorologists and Weather Forecasters are very important because they can predict what the weather is going to be like in the future. To do this, they use very specialized equipment. Within the last 50 years, meteorologists have used weather balloons, satellites, radar, and computers to improve the accuracy of their forecasts.
  • WEATHER BALLOONS carry an instrument called "Radio-sonde" which measures temperature, pressure, and humidity at different altitudes in the atmosphere. Special recording equipment in the balloons converts readings from these instruments into electrical impulses and transmits the impulses to earth. The balloons are tracked with radar to find wind speed and direction. Eventually the balloon bursts, and the instrument floats back to the ground by parachute. WEATHER SATELLITES send back information about storms, fronts, cloud cover, geographical features of the earth, and air and ocean temperatures.

Weather conditions at the BNL site have been recorded since August 1948. BNL is broadly influenced by continental and maritime weather systems. Locally, the major weather systems are modified by the Long Island Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and associated bays, which influence wind directions and humidity, and provide a moderating influence on extreme summer and winter temperatures. BNL is a well-ventilated site, with an annual distribution of wind direction reflecting a predominance of westerly components. Prevailing winds are from the southwest during the summer, from the northwest during the winter, and about equally from these two directions during the spring and fall.

At the time of the revolution of 1830, Nicollet was astronomer at the Bureau of Longitudes at the Royal Observatory in Paris. Financially ruined by the revolution, he came to America, where he became associated with Rudolf Hassler of the U. S. Coast Survey. In 1839, J. R. It is primarily a collection of questions and suggestions of topics to be studied.

    Description
Agricultural and Forest Meteorology is an international journal for the publication of original articles and reviews on the inter-relationship between meteorology and the fields of plant, animal and soil sciences, ecology, and biogeochemistry. Emphasis is on basic and applied scientific research relevant to practical problems in agriculture, forestry, and natural ecosystems. Articles must appeal to an international audience. Theoretical models should be tested against experimental data. Special issues devoted to single topics are also published.
Typical topics include canopy micrometeorology (e.g. the characterization of radiative transfer, turbulence evapotranspiration, and the exchange of trace gases and energy within and above managed and natural ecosystems), aerobiology (e.g. the dispersion of pollen, pathogens, insects and pesticides), biometeorology (e.g. the effect of weather and climate on plant distribution, crop yield, water-use efficiency, phenology of plant and animal development, and the energy balance of animals), forest-fire/weather interactions and the role of vegetation on climate and weather.

The Division of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography (MPO) of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) is engaged in research and graduate instruction in the physical processes governing the motion and composition of the ocean and atmosphere. The program ranges from direct observation to theoretical and numerical modeling of the earth-atmosphere system. There are currently 35 students enrolled in the program. Students come from a variety of educational backgrounds (marine science, meteorology, physics, mathematics, engineering, etc.)
      Resources:
A modern fleet of research vessels, small boats, excellent computer facilities, a highly technical field capability, and an extensive library provide the perfect research environment for both budding and accomplished meteorologists or physical oceanographers. Combined with the other on-campus divisions and unique tools like the Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing, the School offers opportunities in meteorology and physical oceanography available at few other institutions.
