Oceanography at Palomar College: Careers in Oceanography Many people associate careers in oceanography as consisting of swimming with marine animals at a marine life park or snorkeling in crystal-clear tropical waters studying coral reefs. In reality, these kinds of jobs are extremely rare and there is intense competition for the few jobs that do exist. Most oceanographers work in fields that use science to solve a particular problem in the ocean. Some examples include:
  • What is the role of the ocean in limiting the greenhouse effect? What kinds of pharmaceuticals can be found naturally in marine organisms? How does sea-floor spreading relate to the movement of tectonic plates? What economic deposits are there on the sea floor? Can rogue waves be predicted? What is the role of longshore transport in the distribution of sand on the beach? How does a particular pollutant affect organisms in the marine environment?
Preparation for a Career in Oceanography
Preparing yourself for a career in oceanography is probably one of the most interesting and rewarding (yet difficult) paths to travel. The study of oceanography is typically divided into different academic disciplines (or sub-fields) of study. The four main disciplines of oceanography are:
  • Geological oceanography is the study of the structure of the sea floor and how the sea floor has changed through time; the creation of sea floor features; and the history of sediments deposited on it.

    Program description:
The Division of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography (MPO) of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) is engaged in research and graduate instruction in the physical processes governing the motion and composition of the ocean and atmosphere. The program ranges from direct observation to theoretical and numerical modeling of the earth-atmosphere system. There are currently 35 students enrolled in the program. Students come from a variety of educational backgrounds (marine science, meteorology, physics, mathematics, engineering, etc.)
    Resources:
A modern fleet of research vessels, small boats, excellent computer facilities, a highly technical field capability, and an extensive library provide the perfect research environment for both budding and accomplished meteorologists or physical oceanographers. Combined with the other on-campus divisions and unique tools like the Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing, the School offers opportunities in meteorology and physical oceanography available at few other institutions.

Have the students make sailboats and have a boat racing contest. Sailboat races Make wave bottles: Fill a 2 liter bottle half full of rubbing alcohol. Add blue food coloring. Fill will paint thinner until it reaches the top of the bottle. Cap the bottle tightly and wrap with waterproof tape to prevent leaking. Place the bottle on its side and rock gently. You will see the crests and troughs of the waves. Alternative: use baby oil and water. Floating Eggs - an experiment with buoyancy Materials:
  • 1 raw chicken egg for each group
  • 2 large jars and a popsicle stick for each group
  • 1 box of table salt for each group 1 pitcher of water for each group
Procedure:
  • Fill the first jar about 2/3 full of water Fill the second jar about 2/3 full of water and add about 3T of salt. Stir until the salt is dissolved. Keep adding salt and stirring until no more will dissolve. Place a raw egg into each jar.

Exploring Satellite Oceanography (A set of lesson plans for high school science students)
Lesson Plan #1: Introduction to Satellite Oceanography
Graduate School of Oceanography / University of Rhode Island Amy Schubert and Peter Cornillon
Abstract
This unit is an introduction to infrared satellite imagery and is designed to be used as a classroom exercise. It begins with an introduction to infared satellite imagery and explains two sample images. It then gives some uses of satellite imagery and suggests questions that can be answered with the images provided at the end. You can see blow-ups of the small images by clicking on them and see the images listed at the end by clicking on their date.
An Introduction to Infared Satellite Imagery
The satellite images shown here are of sea surface temperature. The data used to construct these images were obtained with an AVHRR sensor (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) carried on a NOAA satellite (Nation Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). This sensor measures the amount of thermal infared radiation given off by the surface of the ocean. It is called 'thermal' radiation because radiation of this frequency warms our skin. A fire feels warm because it gives off lots of radiation at this frequency. The amount of thermal infared radiation given off by an object is related to its temperature (dying embers give off less radiation than a hot fire and a person gives off even less). Thus by measuring the amount of radiation given off by the ocean we can calculate its temperature.

The Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences (DOCS)
Our department is interested in recruiting highly qualified graduate students who can benefit from our interdisciplinary perspectives. The overarching theme of our graduate courses and research is understanding and predicting ecological changes across gradients that extend from coastal areas across the continental shelf. DOCS graduate students benefit from academic and research programs that draw from faculty expertise in physical, biological, geological and chemical oceanography and ecology.
Compared to many other American institutions, LSU has a tremendous advantage in oceanography and coastal sciences. Our proximity to the Mississippi River Delta, extensive estuaries and coastal wetlands, and abundant natural resources combined with the quality of our faculty and students are unrivalled. DOCS is nationally recognized as a center for research on deltaic wetland ecology, sedimentary geology, stratigraphy, sediment transport and coastal ecology. Our research program brings in over $5.4 million in external funding to LSU. We are the primary university user of the State of Louisiana's excellent marine laboratory (LUMCON).
The LSU campus, located in the southern part of Baton Rouge, is bordered on the west by the Mississippi River. Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana and has a population of 500,000. Our subtropical climate and densely wooded makes outdoor activities popular year round and the city has thriving cultural activities including a symphony, ballet and theatre. Our proximity to New Orleans and Acadiana provide easy access to annual events such as Mardi Gras, Jazzfest, the Festival Internationale de la Louisianne and dozens of other regional festivals. There's always something interesting and enjoyable going on in this part of Louisiana.
