The Mariana Trench - Oceanography
What is a Trench? At least 22 trenches have been identified although not all are classified as major.
Of this number, 18 are in the Pacific Ocean, three in the Atlantic Ocean, and one in the Indian Ocean. Where, and What is the Mariana Trench? The Mariana Trench is located in the Pacific Ocean, just east of the 14 Mariana Islands (11"21' North latitude and 142" 12' East longitude ) near Japan. As you probably already know, it is the deepest part of the earth's oceans, and the deepest location of the earth itself. It was created by ocean-to-ocean subduction, a phenomena in which a plate topped by oceanic crust is subducted beneath another plate topped by oceanic crust.
But just how deep is the Mariana Trench?
First off, here are the average depths of the earth's oceans; the Arctic Ocean is 1,038 meters (3,407 feet) deep, the Indian Ocean is 3,872 meters (12,740 feet) deep, the Atlantic Ocean is 3,872 meters (12,254 feet) deep and the Pacific Ocean is 4,188 meters (13,740 feet) deep.
The deepest point in each of the earth's oceans are as follows; the Arctic Ocean's Eurasian Basin at 5,450 meters (17,881 feet) deep, the Indian Ocean's Java Trench at 7,725 meters (25,344 feet) deep, the Atlantic Ocean's Puerto Rico Trench at 8,648 meters (28,374 feet) deep and the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench at 11,033 meters (36,201 feet) deep.

Herodotus map of world, modified from The Challenger Reports (summary), 1895 Aristotle modified from Singer, 1921 About this time, however, observations of natural phenomena related to the seas and oceans began to be written down. Herodotus, around 450 BC, wrote of the regular tides in the Persian Gulf, the deposition of silt in the Nile Delta, and uses the term "Atlantic" for the first time to describe the western seas. In the fourth century, the Phocaean colonists of Massila (Marseilles), sent the Greek astronomer Pytheas on a voyage out of the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar), where he traveled to Britain, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. He describes conditions in a distant far northern sea, which may have been in the Arctic (he describes it as having a 24 hour day at the summer solstice), as thick and gelatinous like a jellyfish (these waters are at times thick with gelatinous organisms of various kinds). " I found no basis prepared; no models to copy... Mine is the first step, and therefore a small one, though worked out with much thought and hard labor. It must be looked at as a first step and judged with indulgence."

The Cumulative Bibliography on the History of Oceanography (CBHO) was published annually in the History of Oceanography Newsletter beginning in 1987 and through 1997, in order to gather in one place the scattered literature on the history of oceanography. CBHO strives to list all works on the history of oceanography. Biographical items like biographies and obituaries are compiled separately. CBHO was compiled from 1987 to 1997 by Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre, Librarian of the Musee Oceanographique in Monaco and Secretary of the Commission of Oceanography of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science, Division of History of Science. More recent citations are being compiled by Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archivist, and are listed at the end of this bibliography (not interspersed throughout the initial alphabetical arrangement.) CBHO includes all works on the history of oceanography, except biographical items like biographies and obituaries. There is no comprehensive bibliography on the history of oceanography before 1987. SUGGESTED CITATION:

Carolina Coastal Science is an innovative, inquiry-based, science resource that utilizes the interactive technologies of the World Wide Web to explore science in coastal Carolina. Carolina Coastal Science has been created based on the goals stated in the National Science Education Standards. While this web site has been designed specifically for an Environmental Science component of a primary and secondary science curricula, it may be used in different curriculum areas. Teachers and students can use this web site independently or as a class using a number of different teaching strategies including open-ended inquiries, guided inquiries, independent research, and cooperative group learning. Carolina Coastal Science contains an interactive photojournal that students can use to construct their own set of inquiry questions to explore; an inquiry simulation in which students investigate the issues concerning the fate of the Shell Island Resort and then debate the future of this and other oceanfront structures threatened by coastal erosion; a section of "Inquiry Images" which can be used as whole class guided inquiry activities; and a Coastal Research Technology section that students can use to identify the scientific instruments used by oceanographers and coastal geologists to collect data. An educators guide is provided with a variety of teaching suggestions to incorporate this site into primary and secondary school classrooms.

The major goals of oceanography are to understand the geologic and geochemical processes involved in the evolution and alteration of the ocean and its basin, to evaluate the interaction of the ocean and the atmosphere so that greater knowledge of climatic variations can be attained, and to describe how the biological productivity in the sea is controlled. The librarian wants to add your book to the collection of books in the school library. Other students your age will read your book. You will read ABC books, especially The Ocean Alphabet Book and Swimming Through the Alphabet . While reading these books, look at the author's style of writing, the format of the book, and the illustrations. Research the ocean with a group of friends and pick a topic for your book. Your challenge is to create an ABC book that includes items from your chosen oceanography topic using all of the letters of the alphabet. Try to come up with an original idea and format. This is your chance to be an author and illustrator of a children's book. The Task Your task is to create an ABC book about the ocean for children your age.
    • Read the books The Ocean Alphabet and Swimming Through the Alphabet. Read a variety of other ABC books to analyze style, format, illustrations, etc.

View full profile … Every research cruise holds the potential for a surprising discovery — something that perhaps will overturn conventional wisdom. It takes luck. But it also takes scientists who can work together, think creatively, question assumptions, and follow where the data lead. For Emily Klein, a marine geochemist at Duke University, uncovering the unexpected has become almost routine. Anticipating what surprises await is for her one of the most rewarding parts of research. Emily studies volcanic eruptions and the creation of new crust on the ocean floor. To understand these eruptions, she focuses on processes that take place beneath the ocean floor, such as where the magma comes from and how it moves through the crust. Emily finds clues to these hidden processes by studying the chemical makeup of lava collected from the ocean floor. The presence of crystals and variations in the amounts of both common and rare elements and isotopes in the lava can tell Emily a great deal about magma’s journey to the surface.
    Hess Deep
New ocean crust is created along the mid-ocean ridges that thread their way through the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. These undersea volcanic mountain chains rise at the edges of diverging tectonic plates. As the plates pull apart, magma wells up from the magma chamber, pushing through cracks in the crust towards the surface. Magma that does not reach the surface solidifies in these cracks, forming slabs of lava inside the crust called dikes.
