Lake View, NY, by Gary Dye. New York State provides a rich and varied assemblage of fossil-bearing deposits which have drawn the attention of both professional and amateur paleontologists for over 100 years. The strata representing the Devonian Period are especially well represented. Fossiliferous Ordivician and Silurian strata, and, to a lesser extent, Upper Cambrian strata, are also present in the State. In addition, New York State contains numerous deposits which were lain down at the close of the last Pleistocene glaciation, many containing plant and animal fossils. The special emphasis will be on the fossils the Middle Devonian, my own particular interest. The Ordovician Period in New York State

King, Professor of Geology at the University of Southern Indiana, about the rocks exposed at the I-170 highway cut. Dr. King describes the rock units and correlates them with rock units elsewhere in the Midcontinent region. He interprets their environments of deposition, and also places them in the context of larger-scale geological processes taking place in the Midcontinent region and around the globe during the Pennsylvanian Period.

ICE AGE PALEONTOLOGY
OF SOUTHEAST ALASKA

University of South Dakota
Southeast Alaska is a spectacular region of glacier-cut fjords and islands covered with dense rainforest. Its primary industries are tourism, fishing, and logging. There are few roads through the region, and travel is primarily by boat and float plane. It is also the home to Tlingit and Haida native groups, famous for their totems and their marine and forest adaptations. Limestone areas of Southeast Alaska have developed an impressive karst topography containing many caves. In the late 1980s the Tongass Cave Project (a joint venture of the National Speleological Society and Tongass National Forest) was created to locate, explore, and survey these caves. Caving expeditions have been conducted every summer since that time. In 1990 the first vertebrate fossils were found, and a major research effort began to explore this new scientific resource. Large-scale paleontological and archaeological excavations have been conducted on northern Prince of Wales Island, and the research is now expanding to other islands and coastal mainland areas of Southeast Alaska. The goal of this research is to establish a complete chronology of mammals, birds, and fish living in the region before, during, and following the Last Glacial Maximum, and up to the present day. This work is helping to establish the timing and extent of glaciation, the presence of Ice Age coastal refugia for land mammals, and the possibility that humans first entered North America by this coastal route.

Paleontology Page
This page offers a broad (and necessarily idiosyncratic) range of selected topics from the whole field of paleontology, with an emphasis upon major ‘landmarks’ in the history of life. I have tried to provide complementary material to the usual fare available to fellow non-professionals. For example, several of the articles on this site concern metazoan origins and early evolution. However, the Burgess Shale is pretty well done to death elsewhere, so I haven’t bothered to write my own ‘Burgess Shale page.’ Instead I’ve begun pages about Chengjiang, Doushantuo, and Sirius Passet. email me.
