On March 27th, 2006, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) sponsored a workshop to raise awareness of this issue and to discuss the implications of the research for public policy. Participants included air quality and public health experts, transportation and land use planners at the state and regional levels, members of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and representatives of regulatory, implementation, and advocacy organizations. A great deal of information was exchanged at the workshop, which can be accessed by following the links below. We hope this information will serve as a resource for interested parties throughout the region and the state. : Atmospheric chemistry and engine technology experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) provided background via video interviews on factors affecting the formation of various pollutants and the potential for air quality improvements through technology. Public Health Perspectives : Public health experts from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the Health Effects Institute (HEI) gave presentations summarizing recent research on health impacts of transportation emissions. Particulate matter emissions by sector : The Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (EOEA) and MAPC provided data on the particulate emissions contributions of various mobile source sectors.

var javascript_version = 1.0; var javascript_version = 1.0; Low Graphics Version Home Environment Air Quality > Clean Air Action Plan Send a link Contact Us Clean Air Action Plan Taking an unprecedented joint action to improve air quality in the South Coast Air Basin, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have adopted the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan, a sweeping plan aimed at significantly reducing the health risks posed by air pollution from port-related ships, trains, trucks, terminal equipment and harbor craft. The Final 2006 Clean Air Action Plan documents (Overview, Technical Report, and Comments Compendium) have been updated based upon input received during the comment period. The San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan was created with the cooperation and participation of the South Coast Air Quality Management District, California Air Resources Board and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Plan proposes hundreds of millions of dollars in investments by the ports, the local air district, the state, and port-related industry to cut particulate matter (PM) pollution from all port-related sources by at least 47 percent within the next five years. Measures to be implemented under the plan also will reduce smog forming nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by more than 45 percent, and will also result in reductions of sulfur oxides (SOx) by at least 52 percent. NOx is a precursor of smog; SOx contributes to particulate matter; and PM has been shown to lead to health problems.

Air Quality and Asthma Air pollution is a serious health issue in Indiana, whether indoor or outdoor, urban, suburban or rural. While the state has made great progress in improving air quality in many areas and for certain pollutants, levels of other contaminants remain at unhealthy levels, at least on some days of the year. Improving indoor air quality has been one of the newer issues in the green movement. To help deal with this issue there are several low or no VOC paints that have been introduced to help people remodel their homes without damaging their air quality. VOCs, or volatile organic compounds , are what put chemicals from paint into the air, and consequently gives paints their odors. As VOCs are reduced, the odor levels drop, and fewer and fewer chemicals are put into the air. The down fall for low and no VOC paints has always been tinting. Tinting the paint adds 150 grams of VOCs into the paint. This is true for all paints. That means that even if you buy a boutique, all natural paint, as soon as you tint it to the color you desire, you just defeated all the work you put into locating and purchasing the paint.
