Biodiversity Information Standards TDWG ) is an international not-for-profit group that develops standards and protocols for sharing biodiversity data. Read more
Basic Recommendations
The most widely deployed formats for biodiversity occurrence data are Darwin Core wiki ) and ABCD wiki ). New deployments of these and other XML based formats should use the TAPIR exchange protocol. The TDWG community's priority is the deployment of Life Science Identifiers (LSID), the preferred Globally Unique Identifier technology and transitioning to RDF encoded metadata as defined by a set of simple vocabularies . All new projects should address the need for tagging their data with LSIDs and consider the use or development of appropriate vocabularies. TDWG's activities within the biodiversity informatics domain can be found in the Activities section of this website.
We Need Your Support
Please consider becoming a member . TDWG needs people with IT skills to develop effective standards for sharing biodiversity data. We need biologists, taxonomists, zoologists, geoscientists, librarians and anyone dealing with biodiversity information. We need institutional members that could use our standards to ensure that what we develop will save you time and money

Nature never deceives us; it is always we who deceive ourselves. - Jean Jacques Rousseau
Had Rousseau walked in the 18th-century Alleghenies, he would have observed a substantially different natural world than the one that we see today. Old-growth forests, filled with mighty chestnut, hemlock and beech trees, dominated the ridges. A wondrous diversity of plants provided food and other essentials of life.
Over the ensuing centuries, old-growth forests were cut, blight decimated the chestnuts, and species such as Japanese knotweed and multiflora rose were introduced, crowding out native plants.
Natural Biodiversity is a program committed to curtailing invasive species and restoring native plants. Learn more about our mission, our projects, and how you can help!

The International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) Program is a unique effort that addresses the interdependent issues of drug discovery, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable economic growth. Funding for this program has been provided by nine components of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Biological Sciences Directorate of the National Science Foundation and the Foreign Agriculture Service and Forest Service of the USDA. The cooperating NIH components are the Fogarty International Center (FIC), National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Office of Dietary Supplements, and National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Efforts to examine the medicinal potential of the earth's plants, animals and microorganisms are urgently needed, since enduring habitat destruction and the resulting diminishment of biodiversity will make it increasingly difficult to do so in the future. 40-50% of currently used drugs have an origin in natural products. The FIC-managed Biodiversity Program is designed to guide natural products drug discovery in such a way that local communities and other source country organizations can derive direct benefits from their diverse biological resources. Benefit-sharing may provide clear incentives for preservation and sustainable use of that biodiversity.

Posted by Kathryn under Intellectual property 1 Comment Nearly a year ago, I wrote a post ahead of things speaking at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa on February 20th and I have developments, this time accurate (I think), on the enola case. And then you go back and say it is what is deposited. But as we said earlier, if you get something from the deposit, it may or may not fall within the scope of your claims. Wow. The last part of the exchange refers to an earlier discussion between Mr. Lee and the judge about how the distribution of a particular phenotypic characteristic in a given sample of seeds/plants of a particular variety will be distributed along a bell curve. The result is that any one seed in the sample of enola beans deposited with the ATCC The exchange also points to how the specification requirements of patent law - and the allowances for depositories that are supposed to circumvent the impossibility of fully describing living organisms - are not well-suited to the uniqueness of living organisms. 100 mg viagra

    http://www.ciel.org/Biodiversity/programbio.html
Through its Biodiversity and Wildlife Program, CIEL promotes the development and enforcement of an international framework of law and policy that supports conservation and sustainable use of living resources, including biodiversity, wildlife, forests and fisheries. One program strategy is to strengthen international legal mechanisms that reward local conservation efforts. Another is to reform international law in other fields in particular trade and intellectual property rules so they support rather than impede conservation. A third is to promote effective implementation of international conservation agreements. What is Biodiversity, and Why is it Important? Biodiversity makes up the structure of the ecosystems and habitats that support essential living resources, including wildlife, fisheries and forests. It helps provide for basic human needs such as food, shelter, and medicine. And it is increasingly threatened by destructive human activities.

The biodiversity portfolio supports initiatives that promote in situ and sustainable biodiversity conservation in protected areas and production landscapes as well as capacity building for implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety(CPB) and knowledge dissemination. The following four strategic priorities define and guide the work of the biodiversity focal area:
    • Catalyzing Sustainability of Protected Area Systems at National Levels Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation in Production Landscapes/Seascapes and Sectors Capacity Building for the Implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety Generation, Dissemination, and Uptake of Good Practices for Addressing Current and Emerging Biodiversity Issues
Six operational programs that cover a range of ecosystems and other existing GEF policies, provide further guidance. The strategic emphasis for the biodiversity focal area is on in situ conservation and sustainable use (Strategic Priorities One and Two); and furthering the impact of the GEF's catalytic role across the portfolio. In addition, the GEF biodiversity Strategic Priorities support the CBD's current work programs and reflect the current thinking within the conservation community.

    around the globe.
Your individual health, comfort, and prosperity depends heavily on the actions you take at home, as well as the actions of your elected representatives and the businesses in your community. But did you know it is also heavily impacted by actions taken more than half a world away? On an ever-shrinking planet, tightly linked by global communications systems, jet travel, and the international exchange of products and services, the conditions of peoples around the globe are intimately connected with the conditions of the adjoining wild spaces and natural habitats. For example, recent studies have demonstrated that pollution constricts blood vessels , increasing the incidence of heart disease and related disorders in heavily polluted areas.
Tropical deforestation is taking a heavy toll on global biodiversity.

Ecology, Economics and Policy With help from Nancy Bergeron, Michael Jaspin, Daniel Kramer, Christian Langpap, Steve Pavich, Christian Vossler Dedicated to the memory of Suzanne Szentandrasi Welcome to the biodiversity bibliography. We have found it useful to collect these references for our own work and we are glad to share our efforts with others. This bibliography contains approximately 4000 references on various aspects of biodiversity and conservation. No pretense is made of complete coverage of all the relevant literature. Certain areas that closely match our interests are well covered (e.g., various aspects of economics, reserve site selection) while other topics are not. The bibliography uses Procite bibliographic software, which allows web-users to conduct searches using a general word search in all indexed fields (such as author and year) on the initial search page. Users can also search all non-indexed fields (such as title and abstracts) using the advanced search feature. Recent articles have abstracts included. Many older articles do not. All articles either have abstracts or are keyed to a set of categories, which can be accessed using keywords. A list of these keywords is given below. If you would like a pdf file containing all the articles within a keyword category, please select the links below. We welcome your input and suggestions. If you have references you would like us to add, suggestions or question, please send them to Daniel Kramer (kram0090@tc.umn.edu). It would be most helpful when sending references to send them in one of the following formats: a Procite format; MEDLARS; or RIS (Research Informations System).
