      Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology
Environmental chemists study how molecular interactions and macroscopic transport phenomena determine the spatial and temporal distribution of chemicals in the environment. It is the environmental distribution and concentration of contaminants that ultimately determine the dose to humans and other organisms. Ecotoxicologists study the transport, fate, and effects of toxic substances in ecosystems so as to improve our understanding of exposure and stress (hazards) to both individuals and populations. This requires interdisciplinary approaches that draw heavily on chemistry, toxicology, and ecology. The curriculum described here provides students with core courses in toxicology, chemistry, and statistics. Electives are selected by the graduate committee to complement graduate research in environmental chemistry or ecotoxicology.

An accepted world leader in the field of ecotoxicological testing, Springborn Smithers' combined US and Swiss staff represent a level of experience unmatched, anywhere. Together the two laboratories offer a variety of programs in the areas of both aquatic (fresh water and marine) and terrestrial species. Specific areas of expertise include beneficial insect studies, aquatic plant growth and reproduction, plant vegetative vigor, seedling emergence and germination, fish and invertebrate early life stage and life cycle exposure as well as more sophisticated studies. Springborn Smithers, by virtue of its state-of-the-art facilities and experienced staff, has the capacity and expertise to test difficult materials (e.g. unstable, low solubility) and analytically confirm exposure levels in low parts per trillion range in a variety of sediment, soil and aquatic matrices. SSL has demonstrated experience with over

Reviewed by Judith S. Weis, Department of Biological Sciences, Rutgers University, Newark, NJ 07102 This book is a collection of papers on fish toxicology (not "ecotoxicology" however). All the chapter authors are English or European, with the exception of Hinton, one of the editors. The first four chapters deal with responses of fish cells ( in vitro or in vivo ) to toxicants. They deal with cell morphology, toxic mechanisms, biomarkers, biotransformations, and genotoxicology. At the end of their chapter, Monod et al. admit that the connection of cell responses to higher levels of organization "has been given very little attention in fish." The next two chapters deal with biochemical responses, one focusing on cytochrome P-450 localization and induction, its usefulness as a biomarker, and the use of immunochemical techniques as a biomonitoring tool for detecting it. In the following chapter on oxidative stress, Lackner emphasizes that reactive oxygen species are a common by-product of xenobiotic metabolism and may be a mechanism by which some pollutants exert their toxicity. He focuses on lipid peroxidation, protein damage, and the biochemistry of detoxification systems. Hinton's chapter deals with multiple stressors in the Sacramento River watershed. He covers such non-toxicological stressors as diversion of river flow and invasive species as well as toxic metals and pesticides, and looks at the "big picture" including behavioral effects and food web alterations. This was the only chapter that was truly

Home Science ECOTOXICOLOGY TSG's scientific staff routinely assist companies in the area of ecotoxicity. This includes assessing exposure and potential risk based on estimated and measured chemical concentrations in environmental media. Our toxicologists have extensive experience in all aspects of environmental hazard and exposure assessment and risk characterization. TSG's scientists have conducted many ecological risk assessments to fulfill federal and state requirements, and to support good product stewardship. We can also arrange and monitor ecotoxicity studies to better characterize ecological hazards. Our staff continuously seek to develop and use new computer modeling techniques that improve the level of confidence in the environmental exposure estimates and ecological risk assessments. Our scientists are skilled in the application and use of specialized software tools to characterize ecological and environmental exposures and provide realistic assessments of potential ecological risk. TSG's toxicologists have guided clients through the design, generation, and interpretation of studies and ecological risk assessments resulting in successful support of chemicals and consumer products, including pesticides, veterinary products, and specialty chemicals.

Scientists find mercury threatens next generation of loons Mar 5, 2008

The results of the 18-year study on loonsa species symbolic of northern lakes and wildernessappear in the most recent edition of Ecotoxicology. This study demonstrates how top predators such as common loons can be used as the proverbial canaries-in-the-coalmine for pollutants that concern humans as well, said David C. Evers of the BioDiversity Research Institute and lead author of the study. (EurekAlert!)

Pollutant Cycling and Ecotoxicology In the past year, our research has focused on confirmation of the presence of PCB degrading genes New Bedford Harbor sediments. To date, isolation of bph-1 and bph-4 genes from the biphenyl-degrading operon has been confirmed. DGGE of these serially diluted Aroclor treated samples revealed different banding patterns between the treatments, suggesting selection of different microbial communities in Aroclor amended dilutions. We are currently examining anaerobic microcosms amended with different PCB mixtures for differential protein expressions using proteomics. Related publications:

Mon May 28 2001 at 12:07:47 Ecotoxicology involves the study of the propagation of toxin s or other harmful substances through an ecosystem . This applies to both natural and man-made toxic substances. It is sometimes regarded as a sub-field of ecological risk assessment (ERA) since real-world applications frequently involve predicting which particular species are affected by environmental disaster s (usually toxic spills) and whether these toxins will travel up the food chain and pose a risk to humans. Specific applications of ecotoxicology include the study of the " red tide " phenomenon (due to toxins in dinoflagellate s or other algal bloom s) that can render seafood (mostly mollusc s and other shellfish ) unfit for human consumption, as well as studies on mercury poisoning from eating fish in contaminated areas.
