For other uses, see Energy (disambiguation) Lightning is the electric breakdown of air by strong electric fields, producing a plasma , which causes an energy transfer from the electric field to heat , mechanical energy (the random motion of air molecules caused by the heat), and light. In physics and other sciences energy (from the Greek energos , "active, working") is a scalar physical quantity that is a property of objects and systems which is conserved by nature. Energy is often defined as the ability to do work Several different forms of energy, including kinetic potential thermal gravitational ... nuclear , and mass have been defined to explain all known natural phenomena. Energy is converted from one form to another. This principle, the conservation of energy , was first postulated in the early 19th century, and applies to any isolated system . According to Noether's theorem , the conservation of energy is a consequence of the fact that the laws of physics do not change over time. Although the total energy of a system does not change with time, its value may depend on the

4. The Energy Story - Introduction
Detailed guide explains what energy is and where it comes from.
http://www.energyquest.ca.gov/story/index.html
Introduction
Energy is one of the most fundamental parts of our universe. We use energy to do work. Energy lights our cities. Energy powers our vehicles, trains, planes and rockets. Energy warms our homes, cooks our food, plays our music, gives us pictures on television. Energy powers machinery in factories and tractors on a farm. Energy from the sun gives us light during the day. It dries our clothes when they're hanging outside on a clothes line. It helps plants grow. Energy stored in plants is eaten by animals, giving them energy. And predator animals eat their prey, which gives the predator animal energy. Everything we do is connected to energy in one form or another. Energy is defined as:
"the ability to do work."
When we eat, our bodies transform the energy stored in the food into energy to do work. When we run or walk, we "burn" food energy in our bodies. When we think or read or write, we are also doing work. Many times it's really hard work! Cars, planes, light bulbs, boats and machinery also transform energy into work. Work means moving something, lifting something, warming something, lighting something. All these are a few of the various types of work. But where does energy come from?

President Bush Attends Washington International Renewable Energy Conference 2008
"...[L]et me start first by telling you that America has got to change its habits. We've got to get off oil. And the reason why is, first, oil is dependency on oil presents a real challenge to our economy. As economies grow and we want all our economies to grow; we want people to be prosperous, we want people who are living in poverty to be able to grow out of poverty. We want there to be general prosperity, but as economies grow, until we change our habits, there is going to be more dependency on oil." President George W. Bush, March 5, 2008

    The Problem
Foreign Oil: America's 20-million-barrel-a-day oil habit costs our economy $1.4 billion a day, and $500 billion in 2006 alone. Every single hour, we spend $41 million on foreign oil. Climate Change: As a result of climate change, glaciers are melting faster; the polar ice caps are shrinking; trees are blooming earlier; more people are dying in heat waves; species are migrating, and eventually many will become extinct.
    Barack Obama's Plan
Reduce Carbon Emissions 80 Percent by 2050
    • Cap and Trade: Obama supports implementation of a market-based cap-and-trade system to reduce carbon emissions by the amount scientists say is necessary: 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. Obama's cap-and-trade system will require all pollution credits to be auctioned. A 100 percent auction ensures that all polluters pay for every ton of emissions they release, rather than giving these emission rights away to coal and oil companies. Some of the revenue generated by auctioning allowances will be used to support the development of clean energy, to invest in energy efficiency improvements, and to address transition costs, including helping American workers affected by this economic transition.

DOE Provides up to $2.4 Million to Advance Solar Energy in 12 U.S. Cities
On March 28, 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it will make available up to $2.4 million to 12 U.S. cities to advance solar energy. Secretary Samuel W. Bodman announced the 2008 Solar America Cities on March 28th while delivering keynote remarks at the New Frontiers in Energy Summit 2008 in Denver, Colorado. Solar America Cities are chosen for their commitment and comprehensive approach to overcoming barriers to and developing infrastructure that supports increased deployment of solar technologies in their municipalities. The cities’ solar projects further President Bush’s Solar America Initiative (SAI), which aims to make solar electricity from photovoltaics cost-competitive with conventional forms of electricity from the utility grid by 2015.
