It's not a lamb, it's lamb
Over at this blog (I really can't find a title anywhere) there is a fascinating post on whether we can get from point A ("Animal suffering is very bad") to point B ("I must modify my behavior as an individual consumer") even though we cannot help any individual animals in factory farms by our actions. I think though, that there is a problem with this formulation. I would reject the stipulation that our consumer actions have no effect on any individual animals and their suffering. I think this stipulation arises in that we cannot connect directly any saved animal to a single action of consumerism (or lack thereof). Saying that therefore we have no effect on individual animals is short sighted and flawed. First, we cannot expect to save the animals already dead or suffering. Second, this was never the goal of the animal welfare/rights movement in the first place. The goal is to prevent future suffering as much as possible. The result of this movement can clearly be seen in the current rise in products that do not use animal testing. So while it would be wonderful to save as many animals currently suffering as we can, this is not the whole point of the movement. Also, I think that the problem of animal suffering is one which has to be looked at on a larger scale than "what effect are my actions having if I take them alone?" This would be similar (though smaller in scale) to asking what contribution you make to evolution as an individual. The answer is hardly any at all. But the tiniest of individual contributions add up to make for significant results. We can't assess the difference we make in animal welfare/rights by what we as individuals have accomplished as consumers. This is simply looking for results in the wrong place, and therefore is a misleading question in the first place.

    edit Description from course catalog
This course examines the disparate moral questions raised by the effects of human activity on the natural environment. Do we have duties to regulate economic activity now to preserve resources for future persons? Do we have moral duties to individual animals living in nature, or to entire species of animals? Is the non-living environment itself the legitimate object of moral concern? The readings include work from philosophers, naturalists, biologists, and economists. (V) .

Environmental Ethics What is Environmental Ethics?
Ethics, a sub-field of philosophy, answers the question "What's the right thing to do?" An Environmental Ethic is an ethic of the environment, in which the environment itself is morally considerable
What is moral considerability?
Something that is morally considerable is a genuine beneficiary (directly owed something), as opposed to a mere beneficiary (not directly owed something, although may be benefited). Compiled by Michelle Bemis
Last Updated December 17, 2001

Four Categories of Environmental Ethics
The House Reformist Mixed Reform and Radical Revolutionary
The House
positions are based on traditional Western ethics in which nonhuman animals and the nonhuman natural environment are not morally considerable.
In Reformist Positions , ethicists attempt to modify The House by extending moral considerability to nonhuman animals. Possible criteria for moral considerabiltiy include rationality, ability to use a language, interest-carrier, sentiency, subject of a life, being alive, possessor of a soal, possessor of intrinsic value, and deserving of repsect/care. Although Reformist Positions modify The House, they leave the structure intact.
Mixed Reform and Radical Positions include Leopold's Land Ethic. This position takes a more holistic approach to Environmental Ethics, rather than the individual approach of the Reformist Positions.

04-12-2006, 01:30 PM nihilism has a significant part in my perception of the human state, so I guess yes? parthiapride 04-12-2006, 02:42 PM Yes me too.
The impulse to destroy, which is sometimes associated with nihilism, is obviously an anarchistic concept.
I believe man will destroy himself without my contribution.
Hopefully within my lifetime... Anonymouse 04-12-2006, 04:45 PM Nihilism is good only to a certain point, so long as it provides the creative Will to Power of new values, as Nietzsche proclaimed.
In and of itself, it is worthless and harmful to the society that ultimately considers it the endpoint. 04-12-2006, 04:58 PM Hmmm, come to think of it, I can't say I'm a nihilist... Sometimes my logic has similarities with its philosophy (for example, towards science and religion), but my emotions are actual more existancial than anything. I have no impulse to destroy. Although I see the lack of significance of everything around me, if I were a nihilist, I'd take that to the next level, I'd be sick to the stomach by everything around me. 04-12-2006, 05:01 PM

Environmental and Organisational Ethics
Year: 2007-2008 (New)
Course credits:
Course code: LKZS
Term:
Course Convenor: Dr. Sean Johnston
Prerequisites: None
Course description
This 20 credit, 10 week course surveys the range of ethical questions relevant to postgraduate studies in carbon technologies and their management. It introduces the scientific, social and philosophical issues of environmental ethics, environmental policy, technological choice, and the relationship between these and business ethics. It develops skills in understanding value systems, identifying ethical positions, and critiquing and constructing ethical arguments that relate to environmental issues. The intention is to provide essential background for an environmentally-oriented discipline; to motivate enthusiasm for the wider subject of carbon management; to sensitise students to the ethical dimensions of their subject and its professional practice; and, not least, to enable them to justify to their eventual clients the importance and appropriateness of their activities. The course presumes no prior exposure to ethical questions.
Learning and teaching methods
Ten teaching weeks, each consisting of some two hours of lectures and up to two hours of class discussion and/or problem-based learning (PBL).
