EPA Knows More About Children's Health Today Than Ever - New Report Highlights 10 Years of Comprehensive Research
"EPA knows more now than ever about children's environmental health and how to create a healthier environment for children. This is the result of a 10-year research effort on children's environmental health highlighted in a new report issued today.
"Understanding potential environmental health risks to children is important to EPA," said George Gray, assistant administrator of EPA's Office of Research and Development. "This research will help us assess and address environmental factors that may affect some of the most vulnerable members of our society."
The report, "A Decade of Children's Environmental Health: Highlights from EPA's Science to Achieve Results Program" focuses on 10 years of research funded or performed by EPA's National Center for Environmental Research's Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grants program." To improve the health of New Zealanders we have to address underlying environmental as well as social causes of ill health, including air and water pollution, pesticide contamination of the food chain, and toxic products used in our homes and workplaces. The Greens are strong advocates for policies that reduce the underlying environmental and social causes of ill health, and seek a fundamental shift in how we approach health care. Food Hygiene Information Scheme
The Food Hygiene Information Scheme allows consumers to see how well food businesses in Edinburgh have fared in food hygiene inspections and aims to improve consumer confidence and maintain high standards of food hygiene. The Food Hygiene Information Scheme in Scotland is being run in Edinburgh, Perth Aberdeen Fife and Renfrewshire as a 2 year pilot until November 2008. It was developed and implemented by the Food Standards Agency Scotland with the support of consumer organisations, industry and local authorities. Around 1,000 food businesses within the New Town, Old Town and Tollcross areas of Edinburgh are participating in the pilot, they have been asked to display certificates prominently on the door or window of their premises, showing how well they did in their last hygiene inspection. The City of Edinburgh Council has published the most recent food hygiene inspection outcomes for those involved in the initiative on this website. These certificates, based on current inspection records say “Pass” or “Improvement Required”. An “Awaiting Inspection” certificate is available for new businesses.

Environmental Health
GENERAL INFORMATION
Environmental Health is an aspect of public health that focuses on the relationships between the environment and human health. Environmental Health identifies, prevents, and controls these effects. The goal of Environmental Health is to minimize the public’s exposure to environmental hazards. The Division of Environmental Health has professional staff Sanitarians that are specialized in specific program areas, such as wells, septic systems, food and vending inspections, site reviews, and permit issuances. Sanitarians provide consultation, education, regulatory, and enforcement services. The laws, rules, and enforcement authority are delegated from the State of Michigan. The Division of Environmental Health often works closely with the Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), Michigan Department of Consumer and industry Services (MCIS), and the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) to promote education, training, and enforcement. PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Division of Environmental Health performs a variety of services in order to protect the citizens of St. Clair County from environmental hazards, such as food service inspections, well water monitoring, pool and camp inspections, and on-site sewage regulations. How To Shock The Pool (Chlorinate To Breakpoint)
Introduction
When you start to smell "chlorine", what you are really smelling are chloramines. Chloramines are chemical compounds formed by chlorine combining with swimmer wastes such as sweat, urine, body oil, etc. Chloramines are non-effective as a disinfectant and will cause eye and skin irritation. The chloramine level is calculated by subtracting the free chlorine from the total chlorine in the pool/spa water. Pool/spa water must be tested for combined level at least twice a week. Although most courses recommend the level not to exceed .2 ppm, we recommend that the level not exceed .5 ppm (due to the availability of reasonably priced test kits). The average frequency of shocking is 2-3 weeks for an indoor pool and 7-10 days for an outdoor pool. However, high bather loads will result in more frequent superchlorination. Note: Pools using bromine as a sanitizer must also perform breakpoint superchlorination using chlorine, as bromine is not available in a form for this procedure. (bromine for pools is a compound of bromine and chlorine) Like chlorine, bromine combines with organic impurities to form combined bromine and bromamines.
