The Pakistan Environmental Protection Act, 1997, makes EIA mandatory for all projects likely to have any such impact. The EIA aims to assess the impact at an early stage of project planning, design and development and build into the project alternatives, and ways and means to mitigate the adverse effects. The EIA leads towards environment-friendly projects and makes the projects cost effective. The EIA, therefore, is an essential part of project design and appraisal. Currently, at many private and public forums a dire need has been emphasized for institutional and personal capacity building on conducting EIA and evaluating Environmental Impact Statements (EIS). After a training need assessment, this module has been designed to provide practical help to those involved in various stages of EIA process, from screening and scooping to preparation of EIS by the developers or their consultants, and appraisal by the competent authorities and other interested parties to provide and obtain best possible information for decision making.
