Chronology of Quaternary climate change
Analysis is not restricted to speleoethems however and we have also analysed corals, calcite veins, lake sediments, teeth and ferro-manganese crusts. Many of the results also complement work being undertaken in the realm of human evolution and biostratigraphy using bones found in caves (see Isotopes and Archeology theme). Much effort is currently devoted to the comparison of U-Th and radiocarbon ages of speleothems from the Bahamas. Initial results of international collaboration between the Universities of Arizona and Minnesota, USA suggested dramatic changes in past 14C concentrations in the atmosphere and prompted considerable interest (see Beck, Richards et al. 2001, Science 292, 2453-2458). We have secured further funds (in UK and USA) for continued development and validation of this work (NERC and Leverhulme-funded) (figure below). Combined stable isotope and trace element data from speleothems provide valuable information about the past state of atmosphere, air mass trajectories, vadose geochemistry and past vegetation change amongst other parameters. In collaboration with other laboratories we are involved in the provision of chronological constraints for speleothem archives from many locations on the globe, including Mulu, China, Spain, South Africa and UK. We are also working on past sea levels in Bahamas, Yucatan and Croatia.

On the road looking for typos
    Mar 29, 2008
"Herson, who was working in a Borders bookstore in Virginia Beach when he got the call from Deck, didn't need a whole lot of persuading. "The typo thing was just goofy enough to seem like a lot of fun," he said.A Manchester, N.H., native, Deck graduated from Dartmouth in 2002 with a degree in creative writing. He and Herson, a Dartmouth classmate, later moved to Washington, D.C., where Deck worked for an academic publishing house and as a magazine and journal editor. In 2006 he relocated to... Perhaps, the sheer pace of global change prevents us from sheer incredulous amazement. Kosovo, of course, happens to be the latest entrant, and it also exemplifies the acrimony, the anxiety that the old constructs seem to feel at this amoeba-like splitting of the body. (India Times)
    Modern do-gooders
    Mar 22, 2008
Bill Drayton, the godfather of this movement, went to Harvard, Yale, Oxford and McKinsey before founding Ashoka, a global change network. Those who follow him typically went to some fancy school, did a stint with Teach for America or AmeriCorps before graduate school. (International Herald Tribune Ed/Op)

At the forefront of global change science
The topicality of global change ensured our internationally respected experts in this field were kept very busy this year.

Our Global Change Processes Team has built on more than a decade of research on terrestrial-based greenhouse gas emissions to help key customers such as MfE and MAF to deliver improved, defensible national greenhouse gas inventories; to provide tools and information to help with mitigation of and adaptation to climate change; and to raise awareness of opportunities and risks of a changing climate. We represented the Ministries at international climate change meetings, facilitated workshops and provided ongoing technical advice to inform policy, and briefed Government representatives attending international climate change events. . Defining this risk more accurately is a high priority in new research now underway.
