Earth Hour
Saturday night March 29th
Last night (March 29th), cities and communities around the world shut down unnecessary lights and equipment for one hour as part of a symbolic gesture towards reducing our global carbon emissions called "Earth Hour".
For more information on Earth Hour Fun Fact : The Athletics Department was contacted and they rescheduled an event Saturday evening so that it ended by 7:30.
By turning off Schoellkopf's lights for one hour 264 KW-hr is saved.
What Is Sustainability?
"Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" is one widely accepted definition of sustainability. Stated differently, it involves reorganizing our life support systems - agriculture, transportation, energy production, etc. - so that life on Earth can be sustained indefinitely. Our environment certainly has limits that can't be exceeded without adverse consequences. We can't simply ignore the amount of resources we extract from the Earth, how much waste we throw away, how much pollution is released into our air and water, and the effect that these practices have on our communities. Around the world, there are increasing indications that our current way of life is unsustainable: smog-clouded air, eroded soils, disappearing wildlife habitats, starving people, civil unrest, melting icebergs, and more. As we degrade our natural resources and continue to have vast negative impacts on our climate and environment, this way of life is being called into question.

PROGRESS AND ITS SUSTAINABILITY
This Web page and its satellites are aimed at showing that human material progress is desirable and sustainable. People have worried about many problems. These pages discuss energy in general nuclear energy solar energy food supply ... useful references . Other problems are discussed in the main text including minerals and pollution. The sustainability pages are essentially done, although I plan to improve them and respond to inadequacies people find. Having done my best to show that material progress is sustainable, I can justifiably turn my attention to the future and present ideas about what progress people will want and what can be achieved. The emphasis is on opportunities rather than on inevitabilities. Most of the contentions of these pages are supported by simple calculations based on readily available numbers. Here's

Press Release: NC State Students Edge Carolina In Water Challenge; Students Combine to Save 11 Million Gallons
Students from North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill combined to save more than 11 million gallons of water in a three-month water-conservation competition that saw NC State students edge their Carolina counterparts.
The contest was conceived as a way to respond to the continuing drought in North Carolina. The two schools established an initial baseline for the competition, with NC State using 31 gallons of water per residence hall student per day to UNC-Chapel Hill’s 34. The following results show the overall decrease in water used per student per day, average water used per student per day and percent reduction per student per day.

Sustainability Initiatives
Creating a more sustainable community is a top priority for Minneapolis leaders. The quality of life in Minneapolis is linked to the health and well-being of our community and our environment. Sustainability is defined as meeting current needs without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs by balancing environmental, economic and social (equity) concerns. In Minneapolis we are defining this as Living Green, Living Healthy and Living as a Community.

Mark J.
