Nowadays, abaci are often constructed as a wooden frame with beads sliding on wires, but originally they were beads or stones moved in grooves in sand or on tablets of wood, stone, or metal. The abacus was in use centuries before the adoption of the written modern numeral system and is still widely used by merchants and clerks in China, Japan, Africa, India and elsewhere. The user of an abacus is called an abacist ; he or she slides the beads of the abacus by hand.

Objectives
  • Students will understand the main concept of the abacus, a counting tool for arithmetic.
  • Students will make an abacus and be able to demonstrate simple numbers, addition and subtraction.
Background Information for This Lesson People have counted, added and subtracted with an abacus since ancient times. The name comes from the Greek word, abax, meaning "board" or "calculating table." While there is no actual record of who invented the abacus, it is depicted in a sketch book written during the Yuan Dynasty (14th Century) and there at least more than 600 years old. Webster's dictionary defines abacus as a "frame with beads or balls sliding back and forth on wires on in slots, for doing or teaching arithmetic." Arithmetic includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The abacus can also be used to work with fractions and with finding square and cube roots. The advantages of its use over pencil or pen arithmetic is time . It is faster than writing down the problem and solving it. When working with the abacus one just needs to be accurate. You leave the memory work to the abacus frame.

What is an abacus?
An abacus is a calculator used first by the Chinese since about 500 BC, for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as fractions and square root. It consists of a wood frame divided into 2 parts separated by a beam, with an upper deck of 2 rows of beads and a lower deck of 5 rows of beads. There is a series of vertical rods on which wooden beads are allowed to slide freely. Its inventor is unknown. However, the abacus as we know it today did not appear in China until about 1200 A.D.
How did it get its name?
Abacus comes from the Greek word "abax" which means calculating board or calculating table.
Are the Chinese the only users of abaci?
No, in fact the Japanese used it in about 1600 AD, but they call it a soroban . Earlier than this, however, was a discovery of one made by the Aztec in use about 900 to 1000 AD, where the counters (beads) were made from kernels of corn threaded through a string attached to a wood frame. Abaci are still in use in Asia.
What is the function of the beads?
