Jump to: navigation search 1990s Pressure-sensory Chess Computer with LCD screen The idea of creating a chess -playing machine dates back to the eighteenth century. Around 1769, the chess playing automaton called The Turk became famous before being exposed as a hoax . Before the development of digital computing , serious trials based on automatons such as El Ajedrecista of 1912, were too complex and limited to be useful for playing full games of chess. The field of mechanical chess research languished until the advent of the digital computer in the 1950s. Since then, chess enthusiasts and computer engineers have built, with increasing degrees of seriousness and success, chess-playing machines and computer programs. Chess-playing computers are now available at a very low cost. There are many programs such as Crafty Fruit and GNU Chess that can be downloaded from the Internet for free, and yet play a game that with the aid of virtually any modern personal computer , can defeat most master players under tournament conditions. Top commercial programs like Shredder or Fritz have surpassed even world champion caliber players at blitz and short time controls . As of February 2007 Rybka is top-rated in many rating lists such CCRL CEGT SSDF SCCT , and CSS rating lists and has won many recent official computer chess tournaments such as CCT 8 and 9 , 2006 Dutch Open Computer Championship , the 16th IPCCC , and the 15th World Computer Chess Championship Chessmaster 10th edition running on

COMPUTER CHESS
by Dan and Kathe Spracklen
Dan and Kathe Spracklen are the authors of Sargon, the most popular chess playing program for home computers.
E ver wonder how a computer can play a game of chess? Just think about it. Chess is a strategy game. You have to study the board and plan how to maneuver your pieces. Finally, after devising a complex strategy, you play the decisive move-checkmate! How can a computer study a chess board? How can it make plans? How can it checkmate?
Taken all at once, the problem might seem unsolvable. But the job can be broken down into three main parts:
1) The mechanics phase: describing a chess board and pieces in a way the computer can understand and teaching it how to move the pieces according to the rules of chess.
2) The search phase: looking ahead at what can happen as the game progresses. The computer still can't make real plans the way a human does, but instead must look at thousands of possibilities-many times more than the human mind can handle.
3) The evaluation phase: sizing up the merits of a particular position on the chess board. It wouldn't do any good for the computer to look at all those positions if it didn't know which ones were better than the others. Sure, it might know when the other guy is checkmated. But if mate isn't in sight how does it know what to do?

Office Supplies Buy Posters A-Z Products Website Advertising ... Chess enthusiasts and computer engineers have attempted to build, with increasing degrees of seriousness and success, chess-playing machines since . Their motivations can essentially be consolidated into two: firstly, to build a machine to play chess with for solo entertainment, and secondly, to investigate chess as a problem which might provide some insight into human cognition. In this view, the history of computer chess is both a spectactular success and a virtually complete failure. Chess-playing computers are available for negligible cost, and there are many programs (even the free GNU Chess , Amy, Pepito, Crafty ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt/ ) and more http://wbec-ridderkerk.nl/ )) that play a game that, with the aid of virtually any modern personal computer can defeat most master players under tournament conditions, while top commerical programs like Fritz have surpassed even world champion caliber players at blitz and short time controls. However, to the surprise and disappointment of many, chess has taught us little about building machines that offer human-like intelligence, or indeed do anything except play excellent chess. For this reason, computer chess is no longer of great academic interest to researchers in

Chess Pig, and computer chess Many years ago, man discovered computers. After using his newly discovered computers to calculate artillery trajectories and otherwise maim and/or kill other men, man got bored and invented video games, and all was good.
One of the first, and best, video games ever created was computer chess. Chess is a great computer game for a number of reasons: 1. People are good at it.
2. Computers are good at it
3. People and computes are good at it for totally different reasons.
4. Is a technically challenging game to make.
While it may not be have flashy graphics, or an interesting story line, It's a real battle of man versus machine, and it has captured the imaginations of many a poor soul. The replay value alone is unparalleled.
On February 1996, the man many consider to be the best chess player ever to live, Gary Kasparov, did battle with the product of IBM, Deep Blue. It was a big event, and people all over the world (including me) watched as our great-white-hope took on the behemoth.
The machine won.

Computer chess - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The prime motivations for computerized chess playing have been solo entertainment (allowing players to practice and to amuse themselves when no human players are available), their use in chess analysis, and as research to provide insights into human cognition. Chess game viewers allow players to view a pre-recorded game on a computer In some strategy games, computers easily win every game, while in others they are regularly beaten even by amateurs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_chess (4430 words)

Computers can beat the world's best chess players but have yet to master other classic games like Go.
