The idea of creating a chess -playing machine dates back to the eighteenth century . Around , the chess playing automaton called The Turk became famous before being exposed as a hoax . Since then, chess enthusiasts and computer engineers have built, with increasing degrees of seriousness and success, chess-playing machines and computer programs. Chess-playing computers are available for negligible cost, and there are many programs (such as free software , like GNU Chess Amy and Crafty ) that play a game that, with the aid of virtually any modern personal computer can defeat most master players under tournament conditions, while top commercial programs like Shredder or Fritz have surpassed even world champion caliber players at blitz and short time controls. Hydra beat Shredder by 5.5 to 2.5 in 2004 running on 16 nodes; and would seem to be the strongest chess system. One should note however that Hydra was running on technically superior, specially designed hardware architecture, whereas Shredder was running on a conventional computer. Some chess commentators think that it will prove stronger than the very best human players under tournament conditions, but it has not yet played enough matches against the world's best players to say definitively.

Since then, chess enthusiasts and computer engineers have built, with increasing degrees of seriousness and success, chess-playing machines and computer programs. The two prime motivations for computerized chess playing have been solo entertainment (allowing players to practice and to amuse themselves when no human players are available) and as research to provide insights into human cognition . In the former endeavor computer science has been a phenomenal success, from the earliest real attempts to programs which challenge the best human players in less than fifty years. The latter objective has largely been unrealized. We can say that chess play is not an intractable problem to modern computing.

Chess enthusiasts and computer engineers have attempted to build, with increasing degrees of seriousness and success, chess-playing machines since . Motivations can essentially be consolidated into two: firstly, to build a machine to play chess with for solo entertainment, and secondly, to investigate chess as a problem which might provide some insight into human cognition. In this view, the history of computer chess is both a spectacular success and a virtually complete failure. Chess-playing computers are available for negligible cost, and there are many programs (even the free GNU Chess , Amy, Pepito, Crafty , and more ) that play a game that, with the aid of virtually any modern personal computer can defeat most master players under tournament conditions, while top commercial programs like Fritz have surpassed even world champion caliber players at blitz and short time controls. However, to the surprise and disappointment of many, chess has taught us little about building machines that offer human-like intelligence, or indeed do anything except play excellent chess. For this reason, computer chess, (as with other games, like Scrabble ) is no longer of great academic interest to researchers in artificial intelligence , and has largely been replaced by more intuitive games like igo as a testing paradigm. Chess-playing programs essentially explore huge numbers of potential future moves by both players and apply a relatively simple evaluation function to the positions that result where as a game like

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/02/08/nyregion/08CHES.html Who's Best at Chess? For Now, It's Neither Man Nor Machine By PAUL HOFFMAN battle-weary Garry Kasparov and a stolid Deep Junior agreed to a 28-move draw yesterday in the last game of their man-vs.-machine chess competition at the New York Athletic Club. The six-game match ended in a tie, with each side winning a game and drawing the other four. Mr. Kasparov, the Russian grandmaster, earned $750,000 for his effort. The money was put up by the World Chess Federation, and the competition was staged by X3D Technologies, a Manhattan company that manufactures a system for viewing computer and television images in three dimensions. The even score disguised the fact that the games were fiercely fought. In 1997, Mr. Kasparov, who was then the world chess champion, famously lost a match to the I.B.M. supercomputer Deep Blue. In that encounter he played conservatively, trying to avoid the tactically complicated positions that he normally favors against human opponents, but that are dangerous against calculating monsters like Deep Blue and Deep Junior. "This time he played his trademark aggressive chess," said Mig Greengard, a New York master who provided live commentary during the games at www.chessninja.com on the Web. "He won the first game the same way he disposes of the best humans. He came up with a startling novelty in the opening and then pressed his initiative until he had an overwhelming material advantage and Deep Junior threw in the towel."
