... Rope Care
Safety:
Rope, and the sports associated with rope, can be dangerous. Wrongly handled, gripped, or tied, rope can kill, maim, or burn. You could be the victim! So, handle rope with care, inspect and test any knot you tie, and respect any rope subject to a heavy load, e.g., a rope controlling a large sail, a mooring rope when you are docking or berthing, and especially your own climbing rope. Never try to control a heavily loaded rope or fishing line with your bare hands. Control rope by taking two or more turns round a winch, cleat, or post, and use appropriate equipment for fishing line. It is unfortunate, but true, that the danger associated with heavily loaded rope or fishing line is commonly learned by experience, which is often very painful and could be lethal.
Knots Weaken Rope
They do! A great deal is written about which knots weaken a rope most. An angle, a kink, or a knot, stresses the fibers unevenly and weakens the rope. If this concerns you, you are using rope that's too thin. Although some knots in some ropes are claimed to only weaken a rope to about 80% of its rated strength, other knots weaken a rope to about 50%. It is therefore simpler, and certainly safer, to assume that even brand new rope will perform at no more than 50% of its rated breaking strength. And, if the rope is old, worn, or damaged by sunlight or chemicals - expect considerably less. For some useful test results visit Dave Richards'

Knot In mathematics, a knot is defined as a closed , non-self- intersecting curve that is embedded in three dimensions and cannot be untangled to produce a simple loop (i.e., the unknot ). While in common usage, knots can be tied in string and rope such that one or more strands are left open on either side of the knot, the mathematical theory of knots terms an object of this type a " braid " rather than a knot. To a mathematician, an object is a knot only if its free ends are attached in some way so that the resulting structure consists of a single looped strand. A knot can be generalized to a link , which is simply a knotted collection of one or more closed strands. The study of knots and their properties is known as knot theory Knot theory was given its first impetus when Lord Kelvin proposed a theory that atoms were vortex loops, with different chemical elements consisting of different knotted configurations (Thompson 1867). P. G. Tait then cataloged possible knots by trial and error. Much progress has been made in the intervening years. Schubert (1949) showed that every knot can be uniquely decomposed (up to the order in which the decomposition is performed) as a knot sum of a class of knots known as prime knots , which cannot themselves be further decomposed (Livingston 1993, p. 5; Adams 1994, pp. 8-9). Knots that can be so decomposed are then known as

Unfortunately I'm much too busy with real, paying work nowadays to update Knots on the Web as often as I used to. Consequently, it has far too many dead links and omits far too many good, new sites. I wish I could say that this will change soon, but it won't. Until it does, please use what is still useful here and forgive the weak spots. If you have a specific knot need or question, and the surviving links here don't help you with it, then try posting your question to rec.crafts.knots or running a search on Google Welcome to my collection of knotting resources. My major sections are on Knot Tying Knot Theory , and Knot Art . But knot lovers will understand that these distinctions are artificial. For example, a good practical knot is both a nugget of hard-won technology and a thing of beauty. Decorative knotting can be useful, and in any case requires uncommon dexterity and practical tying ability. Software developed to help mathematical knot theorists has produced some of the most beautiful knot images ever seen. So look at all three sections even if you think your interests are narrow. You might become happily entangled. My fourth section is on Knot Discussion . Use these discussion forums to find answers to your knotting questions and to help others who know less than you do. My fifth section is on Knot Software . You'll be surprised at how knotting software can make it easier for you to learn to tie knots, to explore the mathematical properties of knots, and to create stunning images of knots, including knots never seen on Earth.

[Added 12/14/97] This knot is a sort of compromise between the Double Harness Bend [Ashley 1421] and the Barrel Knot [Ashley 1413], though I find it easier to untie than either. Others may disagree, however. I developed it mainly to satisfy my (perhaps irrational) preference for what Ashley calls "cruciform" bends, bends from which the bitter ends emerge at opposing right angles. [Added 12/22/97] Although the first graphic above gives a (slightly) better idea of the shape of the knot, it can actually be drawn with fewer crossings (10 vs. 12) as in the second illustration. [Added 3/13/98] This version, although it has even more crossings (14), gives a very good idea of the final shape of the knot, and of its attractive appearance. [Added 12/30/97] To point out some other relatives of this knot: it bears a certain resemblance to the Surgeon's Knot [Ashley 1209], but the knot it actually resembles most closely is Ashley 1450, which Ashley developed as a hawser bend; the above is essentially a symmetrical version of that knot. [Added 1/13/98] Though I realize that it may turn out that this knot is not original to me, in the meantime, to have a more convenient method of referring to it I tentatively dub it the "Basketweave Bend", because of the appearance of the back face of the knot. It, too, can be tied (in loop form) to a ring without first knotting the rope (see below). Perhaps I'll add a graphic showing the method for that.

Every one knows from experience how to create a knot. We do this all the time, often unwittingly. Knots whose ends were glued together and their classification form the subject of a branch of Topology known as the Knot Theory. On the left there is a picture of the Left Trefoil knot. On the right there is the Right Trefoil knot. It's impossible to continuously (i.e. stretching and twisting but without causing damage to either of them) deform one into another. However, it must be noted that the two knots are topologically equivalent in the sense that there exists a topological transformation that maps one into another. The knots are mirror reflections of each other. In the real world, it can be argued that mirror reflections are only mental images whose existence is entirely different from that of the objects whose reflections they are. In Mathematics, reflections are as real as the objects themselves. Mathematically, reflections are topological transformations that could not be carried out on the real world objects. But
