Basic Advice on Tying Knots
It is important not only to select the right knot for a particular job but to tie it properly. Poorly Tied knots will mean lost fish and aggravation. Here are a few basic steps to follow when tying all knots for fly fishing. Lubricate knots: Before you tighten a knot, lubricate it with saliva or by dipping it in the water. This will help the knot slide and seat properly. Lubrication also decreases excessive heat which dramatically weakens monofilament. Heat is generated by the friction created when knots are drawn up tight. Seat the knot: Tighten knots with a steady, continuous pull. Make sure the knot is tight and secure. After it is tied, pull on the line and leader to make sure it holds. It is better to test it now than when a fish is on. Trim neatly: Use nippers to trim the material as close as possible without nicking or damaging the knot.

I Will Knot!
This is a site about knots: how to tie them, how to appreciate their beauty. Even the seriously knot-challenged among us can learn to tie many useful and popular knots by following along with the short, step-by-step instructional video clips on this site.
Before you begin, here are a couple quick knot-tying tips to keep in mind:

  • Get youself some nice, thick rope don't learn with string! String is extremely hard to control, and your knots will be so small that you won't be able to see what is going on. About 4 feet of 1/4 to 1/2-inch thick nylon rope will do nicely for learning purposes. Any good hardware store will have this, and it is very inexpensive.
Once you've mastered how to tie a knot from the clips, trying tying it around different sort of objects, at different angles. You don't really know a knot until you can tie it upside-down and inside-out!

Okee-dokee, now it's time to choose a knot to learn from the list below. So fix yourself a nice hot beverage, grab your rope, and repeat confidently to yourself: I WILL KNOT!!

Welcome to the KnotPlot Site!
Here you will find a collection of knots and links, viewed from a (mostly) mathematical perspective. Nearly all of the images here were created with KnotPlot, a fairly elaborate program to visualize and manipulate mathematical knots in three and four dimensions. You can download KnotPlot and try it on your computer, but first you may want to look at some of the images in the picture gallery.

Knots: How to Tie Knots
All about knots: This website contains descriptions and illustrations on tying over 35 knots, including: bowline knots, half hitch knot, overhand knot, hitch knot and many more! Knots are intertwined loops of rope, cord, string or other flexible material, used to fasten two such ropes to one another or to another object. Knots Bends Hitches Splices and Seizings are all ways of fastening cords or ropes, either to some other object such as a spar, or a ring, or to one another. The knot is formed to make a knob on a rope, generally at the extremity, and by untwisting the strands at the end and weaving them together. But it may be made by turning the rope on itself through a loop, as for instance, the overhand knot A bend and a hitch are ways of fastening or tying ropes together, as in the Carrick bend or round spars as the Studding Sail Halyard Bend and the Timber Hitch A splice is made by untwisting two rope ends and weaving them together. A seizing is made by fastening two spars to one another by a rope, or two ropes by a third, or by using one rope to make a loop on another, as for example the

Discussion, comments, and tips regarding use for both sailing and climbing. History.
    http://lasr.cs.ucla.edu/geoff/prusik_knot.html
    The Prusik Knot
The Prusik Knot is a variation of the rolling hitch. Some people use it for mast climbing. Since it's not in The Ashley Book of Knots, I tied one around my pen and scanned it. This page used to contain a description written by me, but then Mark Anderson of the vessel Riparia actually did it and wrote a much better description, so with his permission I've replaced my version with his, slightly edited. I've added a few comments and clarifications of my own at the end. Going Up the Mast by Mark Anderson Climbing the mast is a useful skill, can sometimes be fun, sometimes necessary to repair something, and sometimes be lifesaving for you and your boat. There was a thread on going up the mast on rec.boats.cruising in the fall of 1996 that could be referred to, but here's my technique. Remember that going up the mast is inherently dangerous. Knots could untie, lines could break, cleats could break, you could fall out of your Bos'n's chair. Then you'd fall and perhaps be killed, paralyzed, break something, or even damage your boat. Try this at your own risk. I'd suggest securing all knots tied with the ends of the line by seizing or securely taping the ends to the standing part to minimize the risk of line creep and the knots coming loose. I rarely have anyone to hoist me up, so previously I'd used a long tackle. It's getting harder every time, and I don't like the rats nest of 150 ft. of line on deck, (particularly envisioning doing this at sea), so I was determined to try another way. Being a person who loves simplicity and frugality, I avoided buying Jumar ascenders, and succeeded, after some frustrating trials, in using Prusik knots, following a climber friend's description.

    September 2001
    Untying the Gordian Knot
One day, according to ancient Greek legend, a poor peasant called Gordius arrived with his wife in a public square of Phrygia in an ox cart. As chance would have it, so the legend continues, an oracle had previously informed the populace that their future king would come into town riding in a wagon. Seeing Gordius, therefore, the people made him king. In gratitude, Gordius dedicated his ox cart to Zeus, tying it up with a highly intricate knot - - the Gordian knot. Another oracle or maybe the same one, the legend is not specific, but oracles are plentiful in Greek mythology foretold that the person who untied the knot would rule all of Asia. The problem of untying the Gordian knot resisted all attempted solutions until the year 333 B.C., when Alexander the Great not known for his lack of ambition when it came to ruling Asia cut through it with a sword. "Cheat!" you might cry. And although you might have been unwise to have pointed it out in Alexander's presence, his method did seem to go against the spirit of the problem. Surely, the challenge was to solve the puzzle solely by manipulating the knot, not by cutting it. But wait a minute. Alexander was no dummy. As a former student of Aristotle, he would have been no stranger to logical puzzles. After all, the ancient Greek problem of squaring the circle is easy to solve if you do not restrict yourself to the stipulated tools of ruler and compass. Today we know that the circle-squaring problem as posed by the Greeks is indeed unsolvable. Using ruler and compass you cannot construct a square with the same area as a given circle. Perhaps Alexander was able to see that the Gordian knot could not be untied simply by manipulating the rope.
