64. History Of The Gordian Knot
Provides historical account of the Gordian knot, cast within the greater context of the Kingdom of Gordian.
http://www.gordiansolutions.com/TheKnot.htm

The Gordian Knot
For people the world over, the Gordian Knot represents the difficult, the intractable and often the insolvable problem. Academics , consultants and management gurus trivialize business problems by calling them "challenges." This softer word is supposed to motivate plebeians and keep them happily working. Business is war. Victory comes through struggle. It requires cunning and guile and superior strategy. Only the best thinkers deserve the spoils of this modern war we call "business."
In ancient Macedonia thinking was much the same as it is today. Little kingdoms fought bitterly for their lands. Pretenders rose and fell. No one had vision. None had a plan. All was struggle. Except for one–one gained his rule easily. He was Midas, the poor homeowner. Day by day Midas struggled just to get by. Each day was a "challenge" for Midas. He lived in a marshy area of Asia Minor then called Phrygia. Lore has it that years of civil unrest and aimless wandering of the Phrygians had led the elders to call a meeting of the high council to decide which warring faction would rule next. An ancient oracle had foretold that a man with a waggon would eventually come and end their constant quarreling. Midas wandered into town with his ox-cart while the high council met, discussing the oracle’s prediction. The oracle’s prediction had come true. Midas was appointed king.

Windsor Knot
The Windsor Knot is a thick, wide and triangular tie knot that projects confidence. It would therefore be your knot of choice for presentations, job interviews, courtroom appearances etc. It is best suited for spread collar shirts and it's actually quite easy to do. While just about everyone can use this tie knot to tie his tie, it looks especially well on men with longer necks as its wide form shortens the perceived height of the neck a little bit. To tie the Windsor Knot, select a tie of your choice and stand in front of a mirror. Then simply follow the steps below:
The wide end "W" should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end "N". Cross the wide end "W" over the narrow end "N".
Bring the wide end "W" up through the loop between the collar and your tie; then back down.
Pull the wide end "W" underneath the narrow end "N" and to the right, back through the loop and to the right again so that the wide end "W" is inside out.

Gordian Knot
Alexander Cuts the Gordian Knot
The Gordian Knot is a metaphor for an intractable problem, solved by a bold stroke ("cutting the Gordian knot"). The myth it refers to is associated in legend with Alexander the Great. According to a Phrygian tradition, an oracle at Telmissus, the ancient capital of Phrygia, decreed to the Phrygians, who found themselves temporarily without a legitimate king, that the next man to enter the city driving an ox-cart should become their king. Gordias, a poor peasant, happened to drive into town with his wife, both riding on an ox-cart, and he was declared king. In gratitude, he dedicated the ox-cart to the Phrygian god Sabazios, whom the Greeks identified with Zeus, and either tied it to a post or tied its shaft with an intricate knot of cornel (Cornus mas) bark. It was further prophesied by an oracle that the one to untie the knot would become the king of Asia, or at least so claimed the publicists in the circle of Alexander the Great. The ox-cart, often depicted as a chariot, was an emblem of power and constant military readiness. It still stood in the palace of the former kings of Phrygia at Gordium in the 4th century BC when Alexander arrived, at which point Phrygia had been reduced to a satrapy of the Persian Empire. In 333 BC, wintering at Gordium, Alexander attempted to untie the knot. When he could find no end to the knot, to unbind it, he sliced it in half with a stroke of his sword, producing the required ends (the so-called "Alexandrian solution"). Ever since then, when a person has settled a difficulty by bold or violent means instead of patiently solving it, the custom has been to say that he has "cut the Gordian knot," in memory of Alexander's feat.

Don't forget to visit our bookshop for a range of great titles on fishing generally, and knots and rigs in particular. There is one small hitch encountered by many first time knot-tiers. Their expert instructors seem to assume that their fellow fishermen are familiar with the Surgeon's Knot, the Bimini Twist and the like. But long before I moved into the field of knot-tying, I was content to join a line-to-swivel, swivel-to-trace and trace-to-hook via a Simple Loop Knot, where the loop is made only perhaps 25mm long - just long enough to pass over the hook and swivel. The Loop Knot can be tied readily in the dark, and equally readily attached to swivel and hook. If fishing for flathead, you may have more confidence in your gear if the loop to the hook is made about 12.5cm long, thus taking the fish on a doubled trace. As experience is gained, you may wish to move on from the Loop Knot to knots that lie closer to hook and swivel. One of these is the Half Blood Knot, which is more correctly half of the Barrel Knot. THIS KNOT WILL SLIP. It has cost me more fish than I want to remember.

Weather Knots Knots and pioneering can become a very useful skill in itself as well as a platform for showing what advantage scouting can offer over other youth organisations. Once you have learnt the basic ideas and knots in the cubs and progressed on through the troop you will begin to pick up those true pioneering skills. It really is a great feeling of achievement to construct a major bridge and framework across a river. Such pioneering activities can bring together not only your knotting skills but principles of teamwork, self motivation, physical abilities and problem solving. All too often taught as a subject unto itself and separate from practical experience knotting often has the stigma of being 'boring'. There are a number of ways of holding the youngsters interest while building their skills up to the 'civil engineer' level. All of these should be pursued by the scouter lest they lose interest at the early stage and never progress and gain those vital skills mentioned above. Connected Knot Links Connected is a central area that provides links to obtain further information on subjects contained in Scouting Resources. From here you can go on to websites related to your area of interest, pick up some further reading in related books and jot down some contact addresses.
