Jump to: navigation search This article is about the group of mathematicians named Nicolas Bourbaki. For the family of French officers named Bourbaki, see Bourbaki family Nicolas Bourbaki is the collective pseudonym under which a group of (mainly French 20th-century mathematicians wrote a series of books presenting an exposition of modern advanced mathematics , beginning in . With the goal of founding all of mathematics on set theory , the group strove for utmost rigour and generality, creating some new terminology and concepts along the way. While Nicolas Bourbaki is an invented personage, the Bourbaki group is officially known as the Association des collaborateurs de Nicolas Bourbaki ("association of collaborators of Nicolas Bourbaki"), which has an office at the ‰cole Normale Sup©rieure in Paris . Bourbaki is a respected name now, but it was initially a clever prank played on the entire scientific establishment. For a few years, people thought that Nicolas Bourbaki existed and admired his talent, which was of course the combined talent of the group.

    Bourbaki, Nicolas (1939) Mike Conlay mconlay@sdcc14 written 6/11/95 presented 6/15/95 Nicolas Bourbaki was not an actual person. Rather his name is a pseudonym for a society of young twentieth century french mathematicians. This group of mathematicians stemed from a group of young graduates of the Ecole Normal Superieure in Paris. These men sought to jointly write a textbook on analysis geared toward French university students. This book was intended to replace the classic annalysis textbook used in France that had been writen by Goursat. They wished for it to live up to the quality of Goursat's work yet modernize it so that it incorporated mathmatical advancements that had occured in the twentieth century. Thus began the mathematical society that collaborated under the pseudonym Bourbaki. The format of Elements is very abstract and strictly logical. Thus it may appear boring or above the capabilities of less experienced mathematicians. Bourbaki once wrote that the Elements were "...directed especially to those who have a good knowledge of at least the contents of the first year or two of a university mathematics course." This, however, refered to those who attended the Ecole Normale Superieue in Paris, one of the finest mathematical institutions in France where such notables as Lagrange had taught. Furthermore, the problems in "Excercise", which accompanied the Elements, are too difficult for any undergraduate. But through this style, Bourbaki's Elements presented an intrinsically complex unified and simplified account of the products of mathematics, even the most recent ones. The Elements were left open to constant revision to accomodate for the ever developing world of mathematics.

    Weil The group's work appeared in 33 instalments, subjected to continual revision and updating. The work as a whole is called Elements of Mathematics . It can be understood only by persons possessing expert knowledge of higher mathematics and follows a pattern markedly different from traditional introductions to mathematics. The order of topics dealt with is set theory, abstract algebra, general topology, functions of a real variable (including ordinary calculus), topological vector spaces, and general theory of integration.     is professor emeritus at the School of Mathematics, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ.
    This article is an outgrowth of a lecture given at the University of Bochum, Germany, October 1995, in a Colloquium in honor of R. Remmert, and at the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, September 1996. With permission of the author, it is being published concurrently in the
    Notices and in the Mitteilungen der Deutsche Mathematiker-Veremigung.
    The choice of dates is dictated by personal circumstances: they roughly bound the period in which I had inside knowledge of the work of Bourbaki, first through informal contacts with several members, then as a member for twenty years, until the mandatory retirement at fifty. Being based largely on personal recollections, my account is frankly subjective. Of course, I checked my memories against the available documentation, but the latter is limited in some ways: not much of the discussions about orientation and general goals has been recorded. Another member might present a different picture.

    Over the years some people have wondered who I am. Ten years ago I asked Richard Gabriel to perpetuate the fiction that "Nickieben Bourbaki" was a pseudonym he used back in the 1980’s and 1990’s. I’m as real as anyone. Here is a blurb I put together that tells a little about my background.. Nickieben Bourbaki was born September 12, 1950, in Haverhill, Massachusetts to George Lanouette and Joyce Snow. George was educated at UMass (BS) and Northeastern University (PhD). George is from Newburyport and Joyce from Merrimac. Joyce Snow was a homecoming queen, part American Indian part Scottish (hence Nickieben), former ski instructor in Tahoe. She worked as a croupier for 2 years, and has a BS from UNH (Durham NH). He maintains four homes: His primary one is at 1 River Road in West Newbury, overlooking the Rocks Village Bridge; one in Benson, Arizona, near the Four Winds Bar; one in Paris, and one in Florence. He is not married, has no close friends, and is reclusive to the extreme. He lived on Kenoza Avenue until he and his parents started to travel. His house was large, about 2 blocks from the Ames house and about 1 mile from Winnekenni Castle.

    The book series in the name of Nicolas Bourbaki (a pen-name for a group of French mathematicians) 'takes up mathematics from the beginning, and gives complete proofs'. This beginning [bourbaki-sets] is something like Zermelo set theory axiomatized in a system of first order logic, which includes an indefinite descriptor building in the Axiom of (Global) Choice. For whereas in the past it was thought that every branch of mathematics depended on its own particular intuitions which provided its concepts and prime truths, nowadays it is known to be possible, logically speaking, to derive practically the whole of known mathematics from a single source, the Theory of Sets. Elsewhere [bourbaki-found] says: On these foundations, I state that I can build up the whole of mathematics of the present day; and if there is anything original in my procedure, it lies solely in the fact that, instead of being content with such a statement, I proceed to prove it in the same way as Diogenes proved the existence of motion; and my proof will become more and more complete as my treatise grows. The Bourbaki development is intellectually elegant, if rather austere. Stress is placed on developing properties of various key mathematical structures like topological spaces and groups. Some structures are instances of several others (e.g. topological groups are both topological spaces and groups), or are derived from others using certain canonical techniques such as completion. The relative sophistication of these techniques means that the set theory is used heavily even in the study of abstract structures; moreover, set theory is often necessary to provide existence proofs for many of them. So although Hilbert's axiomatic method was an important inspiration, deduction from the structure axioms uses much more than pure (first order) logic.
