Nicolas Bourbaki, perhaps the biggest inside joke in mathematics
If you've studied advanced mathematics, you've certainly read or at least heard about the books and papers of the great French mathematician Nicolas Bourbaki, whose works in the 1930's set out a rigorous formulation of modern mathematics. Except he never actually existed In modern graph theory, I'm told that it is fashionable to publish one's results under false names. For example, the graph theorist G. W. Peck

19th CENTURY PAINTED BOURBAKI PANORAMA
BOURBAKI PANORAMA IN LUZERN, SWITZERLAND
by Michelle Bienias
Although many are now familiar with VR tours or panoramas, you may not be familiar with their historical predecessor – the painted panorama.
“Panorama” is derived from Greek and means to “see all”. The Scottish artist Robert Blake is credited with first conceiving the idea of painting a 360-degree vista in a circular fashion in 1787, while walking in the outskirts of Edinburgh. Although the initial reception to his panoramas was lukewarm, he soon hit upon the idea of showing them in a rotunda-shaped building and their popularity took off.
Panoramas reached the height of their appeal in the early 19th century, when special buildings were constructed to hold these circular paintings that attracted crowds of patrons. Cities such as Rome, Paris, London and Geneva boasted panoramas of their locales, many of which can now be found in art museums. Panoramas would make their appearance in America, where they would become one of the most popular forms of public entertainment, in the mid-1800s.

In 1934, and Henri Cartan , both young professors of mathematics at the University of Strasbourg, would frequently, when discussing the calculus courses they were teaching, deplore the textbooks available, all of which they considered antiquated and inadequate. Weil eventually suggested getting in touch with several of their fellow alumni of the who were teaching similar courses in provincial universities around France, inviting them to collaborate on a new analysis textbook. The complete work was expected to total 1000 to 1200 pages, with the first volumes ready about six months after the project began. Not an individual but a collective mathematician. In the 1930s, the Bourbaki group, made up of some of the brightest mathematicians in France, began as a club, holding secret meetings in Strasbourg to update university lectures and texts in the wake of World War I, which had essentially wiped out a generation of young talent. In time, Bourbaki authored encyclopedic accounts of all areas of mathematics and its influence became widespread.
Its origins can be traced to 1934 and to André Weil and Henri Cartan who were Maîtres de Conférences (the equivalent of assistant professors) at the University of Strasbourg. One of their duties was to teach differential and integral calculus but they found the standard text on this subject, Traité d'Analyse

    Lucerne's Bourbaki Panorama
Lucerne's Bourbaki panorama During the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, before the invention of movies, huge panoramic paintings were a major visual attraction in many major cities around the globe. From 1880 there was even an established standard size: 114 meters circumference x 14 to 15 meters height [125 x 15 yards]. Lucerne's Bourbaki Panorama was one in a series of panoramas built according to this standard. The idea was that the paintings might have been exchanged between panoramas to attract new spectators not able to travel around the globe. History shows that this remained a rather theoretical possibility, however.
