Greek mathematics: Encyclopedia II - Greek mathematics - Origins Greek mathematics has origins that are presumed to go back to the 7th century BC, but are not easily documented. It is generally believed that it built on the computational methods of earlier Babylonian and Egyptian mathematics, and it may well have had Phoenician influences. Some of the most well-known figures in Greek mathematics are Pythagoras, a shadowy figure from the isle of Samos associated partly with number mysticism and numerology, but more commonly with his theorem, and Euclid, who is known for his Elements, a canon of geom ...

    • In discussing the ancients, what is usually mean by “Greek civilization”? Discuss the mathematicians of that time.
Lucas Gerlock Ancient Greek civilization is usually described as the Greek speaking-world. The civilization not only covers the geographical peninsula of modern Greece but also regions of "Hellenic cultures that were settled in ancient times by Greeks," such as Cyprus, Sicily, and southern Italy.[1] The Ancient Greek period doesn't have a agreed upon time-span. Ancient Greek civilazation is commonly referred as all of the Greek civilizations before the Roman Empire (Aegean Civilization, Greek Dark Ages, Ancient Greece, and Roman Greece, plus more).[1] According to our textbook "Greek civilization" means "the civilization that began in the Iron Age and reached its brilliance in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C." The rise of Greek mathematic coincided with the rise of the Greek civilization. It is believed that Greek mathematics built on the Egyptian and Babylonian mathematics.[2] The Greeks are referred to as abstract thinkers. Abstract thinking brought success to the Greek mathematics. Their mathematics contributed to many mathematical ideas such as geometry, number theory, mathematical analysis, and approached the idea of integral calculus. While earlier civilizations were concerned with the triangular fields of grain, the Greek civilization were more concerned with the characteristics of triangles. Some of the most well-known figures in Greek mathematics are Pythagoras, known for the Pythagorean theorem, Euclid, who is known for his Elements in geometry, Archimedes, who discovered the principles of density and buoyancy ( Archimedes' principle).
