Born in Cedarville, Illinois, she was educated in the U.S. and Europe. In 1889 she co-founded (with Ellen Gates Starr) Hull House in Chicago, which was one of the first settlement houses in the United States. Influenced by Toynbee Hall in the East End of London (founded 1884), settlement houses like Hull House were a type of welfare house for the neighborhood poor and a center for social reform.
In 1911 Addams also helped found the National Foundation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers, and she was its first president. She was also a leader in women's suffrage and pacifist movements. She received the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize (shared with American educator Nicholas Murray Butler).
The Hull House could boast a group of about 2,000 people a week. It had facilities including: a night school for adults, kindergarten classes, clubs for older children, a public kitchen, an art gallery, a coffeehouse, a gymnasium, a girls club, a swimming pool, a book bindery, a music school, a drama group, a library, and labor related divisions. Summary:
A Selection from:
CHAPTER I - AN ANALOGY In every large city throughout the world thousands of women are so set aside as outcasts from decent society that it is considered an impropriety to speak the very word which designates them. Lecky calls this type of woman the most mournful and the most awful figure in history: he says that she remains, while creeds and civilizations rise and fall, the eternal sacrifice of humanity, blasted for the sins of the people. But evils so old that they are imbedded in mans earliest history have been known to sway before an enlightened public opinion and in the end to give way to a growing conscience, which regards them first as a moral affront and at length as an utter impossibility. Thus the generation just before us, our own fathers, uprooted the enormous upas of slavery, the tree that was literally as old as the race of man, although slavery doubtless had its beginnings in the captives of mans earliest warfare, even as this existing evil thus originated.

Born in Illinois in 1860, Jane Addams was the daughter of a very wealthy man. After her mother died, she was raised by a step-mother and her father with numerous siblings. Jane was expected to receive a good education and her father sent her to the Rockford Seminary which was an all-girls school. Deciding that she would be most interested in pursuing medicine, Jane graduated from Rockford. Her parents weren't particularly thrilled with her decision and wanted Jane to be more interested in a domestic life with the prospect of marriage and children. Addams was sent to tour Europe which is what her parents encouraged to give Jane every opportunity to discover someone appropriate for marriage. When she came home, her father died soon after her reappearance in the states. Jane became more and more depressed after her father's death feeling that she had somehow let him down. It was around this time that she had surgery to correct a back problem and the surgery left her to wear a harness for over a year with limited mobility. After another trip to Europe, Jane Addams returned with a mission in mind. She set up what became known as the Hull House in the Chicago area. The Hull House served as a medical facility and provided hot meals and child care. During the depression in 1893, the Hull House served over two thousand people per week in various capacities.
