Later in life, his father was able to provide a more substantial financial means for his family which enabled Sidney to pursue the educational endeavors that he wanted. Sidney Altman has achieved a status that few will ever achieve. He is a Sterling Professor in molecular biology at Yale University, a symbol that further proves that Altman is truly one of the best in his field. A Nobel Prize winner, Altman earned the award for his discovery of catalytic properties of ribozyme RNase P. He shared the Nobel Prize with Thomas R. Cech. Sidney Altman is a member of Scientists and Engineers for America. He serves on the board of advisors and supports the efforts of those who have a clear understanding of science in the American government.

Altman discovered that ribonucleic acid (RNA) can act as a catalyst see Catalysis ), or initiator, of cellular reaction. Previously, scientists had believed that only proteins could perform this important chemical function. Altman's work revolutionized the field of biochemistry by presenting a new theoretical explanation for the origin of life. For his discovery of the catalytic properties of RNA, Altman was awarded the 1989 Nobel Prize in chemistry, which he shared with American chemist
