Amnesty International
Amnesty International is a worldwide human rights watchdog group that focuses on enforcing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights . The Holy Cross chapter contributes to the organization through political lobbying, raising awareness about human rights abuses on campus, and attending conferences and demonstrations. We currently have about 20 active members on campus. Educating students about the world outside of Holy Cross and helping to improve human rights around the world are our primary goals. Last year our biggest and most successful project to date was the "Landmine Awareness Campaign." We organized several events to educate the campus on the situation of landmines around the world. Highlights included a photo display in Stein Hall, one of the major academic buildings on campus, and two speakers from the group "Physicians Against Landmines." All in all, the project was a great success, and we look forward to similar major campaigns this year. So far this year we have sponsored a speaker on Human Trafficking, done extensive tabling gathering signatures for various petitions, and written an estimated 150 Urgent Action Letters. Our biggest project was bringing Francis Bok to campus in 2003. Mr. Bok has spoken in front of the US Congress and the United Nations about his experience as a slave in Sudan. This event was co-sponsored by the Center for Religion, Culture and Ethics at Holy Cross, the Black Student Union and the Model UN.

June 1997 Amnesty International USA 322 Eighth Avenue, New York, NY 10001 $4.00 "Nursing shares with other health professions a commitment to the well-being of the patient and to a professional practice based on codes of ethics. Over the past two decades, national and and international nurses associations have refined their principles to reflect an increasing commitment to human rights and the protection of the patient. However, because of their frontline work...there are persistent risks of nurses being victimised as a result of their witnessing abuses ...On the other hand they may risk being pressured to collaborate in, or remain silent about, abuses occurring in their presence or with their knowledge." The Nurse's role in Safeguarding Human Rights ..."nurses have individual responsibility but they can often be more effective if they approach human rights issues as a group". The Nurse's Role in the Care of Detainees and Prisoners , first adopted in 1975, reaffirms ICN support for the Geneva Conventions endorses the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.."nurses having knowledge of physical or mental ill-treatment of detainees and prisoners must take appropriate action including reporting the matter to appropriate national and/or international bodies".

As a strong supporter of Amnesty International who encouraged the organization to expand its work to fully embrace economic, social and cultural rights, I take issue with your analysis
Next year marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I challenge the Economist to use this occasion to engage in a broad discussion on realising the full range of rights recognized in the Declaration as interrelated and equally important. You may be surprised how seriously some business leaders are taking economic and social rights!

    What I Like
I like the two column effort. Not the blog type of two columns, but equal sized two columns. Typography is well done and the site has a different color scheme. I also think the nav is well thought out. The images are powerful and the site's design doesn't try to hide them.
    What I Don't like
The nav is unique and takes up a lot of space so maybe that is why the font for it is impossibly small. via Andrew

  • Are you trying to be nice? A "different" color scheme? Not a "god-awful" color scheme? Surprised you didn't note: - the bizarre dropshadow on the bottom of the header. How many angles can light go in at one time? -a pale yellow column, which melds with a pale yellow footer. stylo~ Can't say I like the site all that much. The background is horrendous both in color and pattern. The design stops leaving a gap at the bottom (Firefox). Which in some cases I can understand, but this doesn't seem to be intentional.
