Se r©clamant tout   la fois du marxisme, du nationalisme arabe et de l’islam, ancien activiste terroriste devenu prix Nobel de la paix, Yasser Arafat appara®t comme une personnalit© politique contrast©e et contest©e. Il n’en reste pas moins qu’il a consid©rablement contribu©   donner une v©ritable identit© au peuple palestinien, dont il a incarn© la cause pendant plusieurs d©cennies. De son vrai nom Abel Rauf Arafat al-Qudwa, il est le fils d’un commer§ant en ©pices originaire de J©rusalem. Apr¨s la mort de sa m¨re, en 1933, il est envoy© vivre quelques ann©es   J©rusalem et assiste   la r©volte arabe de 1936 contre l’imp©rialisme britannique et l’immigration juive. De retour en ‰gypte trois ans plus tard, il y demeure jusqu’  l’¢ge adulte.
