Klas Pontus Arnoldson Klas Pontus Arnoldson (1844-1916), Swedish politician, journalist, and Nobel laureate, known for promoting the neutrality of Scandinavian nations and the use of arbitration (settlement by an outside party) to solve international disputes. Born in G¶teborg, Sweden, Arnoldson left school at age 16, after his father died. He worked for a railroad for the next 21 years, first as a clerk, then as a stationmaster. While employed by the railroad, Arnoldson read extensively, focusing on philosophy, history, and religion. Through his readings he became committed to the ideals of peace, tolerance, democracy, and freedom of individual conscience. When Arnoldson was in his 20s, two violent conflicts occurred that strengthened his pacifist leanings. These conflicts were Prussia and Austria invading the Danish duchies of Schleswig-Holstein in 1864, and the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. In the 1870s he began to write articles promoting peace and humanitarianism. Arnoldson quit his job with the railroad in 1881 to devote his full attention to political causes. Before long his persuasive writing style brought him recognition throughout Sweden. In 1882 he was elected to the national parliament, the

Zwei Jahre sp¤ter gr¼ndete er den schwedischen Friedensverein. Seit 1890 setzte sich Arnoldson engagiert und erfolgreich f¼r eine friedliche L¶sung des Konflikts zwischen Schweden und Norwegen ein. Zudem trat Arnoldson als Verfasser pazifistischer Schriften hervor. 1908 erhielt er zusammen mit Frederik Bajer den Friedensnobelpreis. Klas Pontus Arnoldson starb am 20. Februar 1916 in Stockholm.
