Laureatosi all’Universit  di M¼nster nel 1976, Bednorz lavor² dal 1982 nel laboratorio ricerche dell’ IBM di Zurigo per svolgervi un dottorato sotto la direzione di Karl A. M¼ller. Grazie all’esito di queste ricerche sulle ceramiche dalle propriet  superconduttrici ( vedi Superconduttivit  ), Bednorz e M¼ller condivisero il premio Nobel per la fisica nel 1987, un anno dopo aver sintetizzato un ossido superconduttore (di lantanio , di bario e di rame ) a una temperatura di 35 K (-238 °C).
