Nach Abschluss des Gymnasiums und einem Labor-Praktikum studierte er in Breslau und Leipzig Chemie und chemische Technologie. Nach Promotion (1907) und Habilitation (1913) war er Privatdozent an der Technischen Hochschule Hannover . 1913 erhielt er ein Patent zur Kohle hydrierung durch hohen Druck und trat kurz darauf als Leiter des Forschungslaboratoriums in die „Th. Goldschmidt AG” ein.
