Born in Traralgon, Victoria, Burnet graduated as a doctor and, in 1928, joined the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne. During the 1930s he continued his research in London. From 1944 to 1965 he was director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, and from 1946 Professor of Experimental Medicine at Melbourne University. Burnet's research covered diseases caused by viruses . Specific investigations included Murray Valley encephalitis psittacosis , and influenza ; the treatment of viruses; and immunology through the use of vaccines. With Dame Jean Macnamara he discovered that there were at least two
