Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Adolf Friedrich Johann Butenandt (1903-1995), German chemist and Nobel laureate, born in Bremerhaven and educated at the universities of G¶ttingen and Marburg. He isolated and studied the sex hormones estrone (1929), androsterone (1931), and progesterone and testosterone (1934), determining their relationships to steroids . For this work he was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize in chemistry with the Yugoslav-Swiss scientist Leopold Ruika. The German government initially prevented Butenandt from accepting the prize, but he eventually received the medal and diploma after World War II (1939-1945). From 1936 to 1972 he was director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biochemistry (since 1945, the Max Planck Institute), and served as president (1960-72) of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science. Butenandt also studied insect hormones ( see Pheromone ) and viruses.
