Discoverers - Portraits of Women
Marie Curie (1867-1934)
The first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in 1903, for physics, she and her French husband discovered natural radioactivity. Further research led her to the new elements radium and polonium, named after her native Poland. For this, she was the sole laureate of another Nobel, in 1911, for chemistry.
Lise Meitner (1878-1968)
She entered the University of Vienna only in 1901 because of restrictions on women’s enrolment. She concentrated in nuclear physics, collaborating for 30 years with Nobel laureate Otto Hahn. Together, they developed uranium fission.
Gerty Cori (1896-1957)
This Prague-born doctor worked as a researcher for free while her husband taught pharmacology at the same American university. Their long professional partnership was crowned with a Nobel Prize in 1947 for discovering the metabolism of glycogen.
Irène Joliot-Curie (1897-1956)
Daughter of Marie Curie, wife of a physicist, she and her husband discovered artificial radioactive elements for which they shared the Nobel Prize in 1935. She actively campaigned for the social and intellectual advancement of women in France.
Barbara McClintock (1902-1992)
Sole recipient of the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, this American geneticist observed coloration patterns of maize kernels. She found that genes are mobile, that they can move around chromosomes.

All that is needed is a drop of blood or a fragment of bone or skin. The Nobel Prize committee have decided that they will pay for three of the following scientists back to life. You have to discuss which of the following scientists are most worthy of this honour. Below is a brief description of their achievements and a link to further information about them in order to help you reach a decision.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Multimedia 2 items Pierre Curie (1859-1906), French physicist and Nobel laureate, best known for the work on radioactivity that he did with his wife, Marie Curie . In radioactive materials the atoms break down spontaneously, releasing radiation in the form of energy and subatomic particles. Pierre Curie also worked on important topics in the structure of crystals and helped discover the piezoelectric effect in crystals—a property of producing electrical voltages when they are compressed. Pierre Curie was born in Paris and educated at home by his parents. He studied physics at the University of Paris, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1875. He became an assistant teacher at the University of Paris in 1878 and turned his research to crystallography. In 1880 Pierre and his brother Jacques Curie discovered that some crystals developed positive electrical charges at one end and negative electrical charges at the other when the crystals were compressed. These crystals also change shape when exposed to electric voltage. The Curies called this effect the piezoelectric effect.

Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) Born in England; Sir Isaac Newton was one of the foremost scientific intellects of all time. He was a physicist, mathematician, astronomer, philosopher and alchemist. Tradition has it that he discovered the force of gravity while sitting under an apple tree. He recognized that objects always fall down, toward the earth. Newton made an astounding number of scientific discoveries and advancements including his Three Laws of Motion.

Charles Darwin (1809-1882)
This British naturalist is famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection. Charles Darwin believed that life on Earth developed gradually, or evolved, from a few common ancestors, over millions of years. He traveled the world, as a naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle. On this expedition, he visited South America and the Galapagos Islands. He studied the plants and animals living there and collected specimens to study. http://directory.google.com/Top/Kids_and_Teens/School_Time/Science/Scientists/Darwin,_Charles/
