Z Christian De Duve Biography Christian de Duve (born October 2, 1917) is a biochemist. de Duve was born in Thames-Ditton, Britain, as a son of Belgian emigrants. They returned to Belgium in 1920. De Duve studied at the Catholic University of Louvain, where he became professor in 1947. He specialized in subcellular biochemistry and cell biology and discovered the peroxisomes, a cell organelle. Amongst other subjects, de Duve studied the distribution of enzymes in rat liver cells using rate-zonal centrifugation. De Duve's work on cell fractionation provided an insight into the function of cell structures. De Duve was awarded the shared Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1974, together with Albert Claude and George E. Palade, for describing the structure and function of organelles in biological cells. His later years have been mostly devoted to origin of life studies, which he admits is still a speculative field (see thioester). His work has contributed to the emerging consensus that the endosymbiotic hypothesis is correct; this idea proposes that Mitochondrion, chloroplasts, and perhaps other organelles of eukaryotic cells originated as Prokaryote endosymbionts, which came to live inside eukaryotic cells.

In Leuven studierte de Duve ab 1934 Medizin und promovierte 1941. 1946/47 arbeitete er bei Hugo Theorell am medizinischen Nobel-Institut, 1947/48 mit Earl Sutherland bei Gerty und Carl Cori in Saint Louis (Missouri, USA). Zur¼ck in Leuven, wurde er 1951 Professor f¼r Physiologie und Direktor des Instituts f¼r physiologische Chemie der Katholischen Universit¤t Leuven , parallel dazu lehrte er 1962 bis 1983 Biochemie am New Yorker Rockefeller-Institut. De Duve gr¼ndete das zur Leuvener Universit¤t geh¶rende Institut f¼r Zell- und Molekularpathologie.

Çäåñü îí ïðîøåë ÷åòûðåõãîäè÷íûé óíèâåðñèòåòñêèé êóðñ è ïîëó÷èë äèïëîì õèìèêà. Êðîìå òîãî, îí ðàáîòàë äåæóðíûì âðà÷îì â êëèíèêå ïîä ðóêîâîäñòâîì Æîçåôà Ìåçýíà, òùàòåëüíî èçó÷àë òðóäû, ïîñâÿùåííûå èíñóëèíó, è ïðîâîäèë ýêñïåðèìåíòû â ëàáîðàòîðèè. Ê 1945 ã. Ä. îïóáëèêîâàë íåñêîëüêî íàó÷íûõ ñòàòåé è êíèãó «ëþêîçà, èíñóëèí è äèàáåò» («Glucose, Insulin, and Diabetes»).  1946 ã. îí ïîëó÷èë ñòåïåíü ìàãèñòðà íàóê. Çàòåì â òå÷åíèå 18 ìåñÿöåâ Ä. ðàáîòàë â Ñòîêãîëüìå, â Íîáåëåâñêîì ìåäèöèíñêîì èíñòèòóòå, â ëàáîðàòîðèè Õóãî Òåîðåëëÿ, à ïîòîì â òå÷åíèå 6 ìåñÿöå⠖ â Âàøèíãòîíñêîì óíèâåðñèòåòå â Ñåíò-Ëóèñå ñîòðóäíèêîì Ðîêôåëëåðîâñêîãî ôîíäà.
