John Carew Eccles was born in Melbourne and educated at the universities of Melbourne and Oxford. At Oxford, with the British physiologist Charles Sherrington , he studied the way in which signals are transmitted from one nerve cell to the next across the gaps called synapses. Eccles worked and taught in Australia and New Zealand from 1937 to 1966, in which year he became a member of the American Medical Association Institute for Biomedical Research, in Chicago. In 1968 he joined the faculty of the College of the State University of New York at Buffalo. In his research, Eccles worked out in detail the chemical changes involved in nerve-signal transmissions. For this he shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with the British biophysicists Alan Lloyd Hodgkin and Andrew Fielding Huxley . He was knighted in 1958.
