Eigen is known for his studies on the rates of chemical reactions, especially on those that happen extremely rapidly—in a millisecond or less. Born in Bochum, Germany, he was educated at Georg-August University, receiving his doctorate in natural sciences in 1951. He spent most of his career at the Max Planck Institute in Gottingen. He shared the 1967 Nobel Prize in chemistry with British scientists Ronald G.W. Norrish and George Porter . The three were honored for discoveries concerning rapid chemical reactions. Before Eigen's pioneering work, scientists studied the rates of chemical reactions by direct observation or by sampling the concentrations of the chemicals as the reaction took place. When this was not possible, such as for very rapid reactions, various physical changes in the chemicals were tested. For example, scientists would measure changes in color and the way in which it is absorbed or bent to get some idea of how fast the reaction was taking place. This approach was still not accurate enough for acid-base neutralization reactions, which could happen seven or eight times faster than existing tests could measure.

Autore di un centinaio di pubblicazioni, Eigen si ¨ occupato delle propriet  termodinamiche dell’acqua ( vedi Termodinamica ), delle soluzioni acquose ( vedi Soluzione ), e del comportamento degli elettroliti Per gli studi sulle reazioni chimiche veloci, nel 1967 Eigen condivise con gli scienziati britannici Ronald Norrish e George Porter il premio Nobel per la chimica. Eigen e i suoi colleghi misero a punto un sistema adatto allo studio di reazioni chimiche che si svolgono in tempi brevissimi (dell’ordine del millisecondo), per le quali i metodi tradizionali basati sull’osservazione diretta non potevano dare informazioni esaurienti. Essi sfruttarono la reversibilit  delle reazioni chimiche, vale a dire il fenomeno per cui le sostanze prodotte (cio¨ i prodotti) tendono generalmente a ricomporsi nelle sostanze originali (i reagenti), dando luogo a una reazione inversa.
