Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Joseph Erlanger (1874-1965), American physiologist and Nobel Prize winner who studied how nerve fibers transmit electrical impulses. His research provided a detailed picture of the ways in which nerve fibers differ in their properties and functions. It was for this work that Erlanger shared the 1944 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with American physiologist Herbert Spencer Gasser Born in San Francisco, California, Erlanger studied chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, earning his B.S. degree in 1895. He then attended the Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland, receiving his M.D. degree in 1899. Erlanger stayed at Johns Hopkins for seven years, ultimately becoming associate professor of physiology. In 1906 he moved to the University of Wisconsin Medical School, remaining until 1910, when he accepted a post as chairman of the physiology department at the Washington University Medical School in St. Louis; he remained there until his retirement.

Erlanger wurde am 5. Januar 1874 als Sohn s¼ddeutscher Auswanderer in San Francisco geboren. An der University of California schloss Erlanger ein Chemiestudium mit dem Bachelor of Science ab, bevor er an der Johns Hopkins University Medizin studierte und dort weiter auf dem Gebiet der Physiologie forschte und lehrte. 1906 ¼bernahm er eine Physiologieprofessur an der neu gegr¼ndeten Medical School der University of Wisconsin, Gasser war dort einer der Studenten Erlangers. Von 1910 bis 1946 lehrte Erlanger in einer vergleichbaren Position an der Medical School der Washington University in Saint Louis (Missouri, USA).
