Biography
William Falkner wrote works of psychological drama and emotional depth, typically with long serpentine prose and high, meticulously-chosen diction. Like most prolific authors, he suffered the envy and scorn of others, and was considered to be the stylistic rival to Ernest Hemingway (his long sentences contrasted to Hemingway's short, 'minimalist' style). He is perhaps also considered to be the only true American Modernist prose fiction writer of the 1930s, following in experimental tradition European writers such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Marcel Proust, and known for using groundbreaking literary devices such as stream of consciousness, multiple narrations or points of view, and time-shifts within narrative.
Faulkner was born William Falkner (no "U") in New Albany, Mississippi, and raised in and heavily influenced by that state, as well as the general ambience of the South. Mississippi marked his sense of humor, his sense of the tragic position of Blacks and Whites, his keen characterization of usual Southern characters and his timeless themes, one of them being that fiercely intelligent people dwelled behind the facade of good old boys and simpletons. An early editor misspelled Falkner's name as "Faulkner", and the author decided to keep the spelling.
Faulkner's most celebrated novels include The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930), Light in August (1932), The Unvanquished (1938), and Absalom, Absalom! (1936), usually considered his masterpiece. Faulkner was a prolific writer of short stories: his first short story collection, These 13 (1931), includes many of his most acclaimed (and most frequently anthologized) stories, including "A Rose for Emily," "Red Leaves," "That Evening Sun," and "Dry September." During the 1930s, in an effort to make money, Faulkner crafted a sensationalist "pulp" novel entitled Sanctuary (first published in 1931). Its themes of evil and corruption (bearing Southern Gothic tones), resonate to this day. A sequel to the book, Requiem for a Nun, is the only play that he has published. It involves an introduction that is actually one sentence that spans for a couple pages. He received a Pulitzer Prize for A Fable, and won a National Book Award (posthumously) for his Collected Stories.

Faulkner, William
Regarded as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, William Faulkner relentlessly chronicled the condition of the antebellum American Deep South. Creating characters and stories within the fictional Yoknapatawpha County and beyond, Faulkner seamlessly blended the harsh realities of the southern condition with rich cultural histories of his own imagination. Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi on September 25, 1897. His first book, a collection of poems entitled The Marble Faun, was published in 1924. The Sound and the Fury (1929), his debut as a novelist, is widely regarded as his masterpiece. The novel documents the tragic history of the Compson family from the perspective of three of the families' children (including mentally handicapped Benji). The deterioration of this aristocratic Southern family mirrors the downfall of an Old South bewildered by changing customs and values. The next decade was a prolific one for Faulkner, partially because of his financial insecurity. He was forced to alternate between stories he wanted to write and stories he knew would sell. Sanctuary (1931), for example, was a commercially viable detective story, while

From: John B. Padgett, "William Faulkner" article on "The Mississippi Writers Page" website, on the University of Mississippi website (http://www.olemiss.edu/mwp/dir/faulkner_william/index.html; viewed 21 October 2005): After The Sound and the Fury was published in October 1929, Faulkner had to turn his attention to making money. Earlier that year, he had written Sanctuary , a novel which Faulkner later claimed in an introduction he conceived "deliberately to make money." Because of its sordid subject the novel was immediately turned down by the publisher. Faulkner's need for income stemmed largely from his growing family. In April, Estelle Oldham had divorced Cornell Franklin, and in June she and Faulkner were married at or near College Hill Presbyterian Church, just north of Oxford. Estelle brought to the marriage two children, Malcolm and Victoria, and after a honeymoon in Pascagoula, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, they lived at Miss Elma Meek's house in Oxford. Faulkner, now working nights at a power plant, wrote As I Lay Dying , later claiming it was a "tour de force" and that he had written it "in six weeks, without changing a word."

William Faulkner - (1897-1962) New Albany By Tiffany Hammond
Houston High School in Houston, Mississippi. I. Upbringing, Education, Family and Professional Life William Cuthbert Faulkner (as his name was then spelled) was born on September 25, 1897, in New Albany, Mississippi, the first of four sons born to Murry and Maud Butler Faulkner. He was named after his great-grandfather William Clark Faulkner, the "Old Colonel." Faulkner's family moved to Oxford when he was four. Faulkner demonstrated artistic talent at a young age, drawing and writing poetry, but around the sixth grade he began to grow increasingly bored with his studies. Estelle Oldham, his childhood sweetheart, was a popular, vivacious girl in Oxford with an active social life that included dances and parties. Despite her romance with William, she dated other boys, one of who was Cornell Franklin, an Ole Miss law student whom she later halfheartedly married. Phil Stone, a lawyer and guide to Faulkner, recognized Faulkner's talent and set out to help him. In 1919, Faulkner enrolled at the

Faulkner, William Faulkner, William (1897-1962), one of the greatest American novelists, known for his epic portrayal, in some 20 novels, of the tragic conflict between the old and the new South. Back home in Oxford, he was admitted to the University of Mississippi as a veteran, but soon left to write, supporting himself with odd jobs. Faulkner's first book, The Marble Faun , a collection of rather derivative poems, was privately printed in 1924. The next year he moved to New Orleans, worked as a journalist, and met the American short story writer Sherwood Anderson, who helped him find a publisher for his first novel, Soldiers' Pay (1926), and also convinced him to write about the people and places he knew best. This novel told the story of a young solider's return home from World War I, disabled physically and psychologically, and how his subsequent illness and death affects his family and friends. After a brief tour of Europe, he went home and began the series of baroque, brooding novels set in his mythical Yoknapatawpha County (based on Lafayette County, Mississippi), peopling it with his own ancestors, Native Americans, blacks, shadowy backwood hermits, and loutish poor whites. In the first of these novels
