There have been some notorious scientists that have passed through this world. They have left their mark on vast inventions and have contributed to the greater cause. For Enrico Fermi, his contributions to science would be through the realm of physics. Enrico Fermi was born in Rome, Italy in 1901. He became interested in physics and mathematical endeavors through the encouragement found from a family friend. The friend gave Enrico books that elaborated on mathematical and science concepts. It would become the driving force that he needed to pursue a lifelong career in the world of physics. Enrico Fermi became known for his work developing the first nuclear reactor. He also became well known for his quantum theory, nuclear and particle physics, and statistical mechanics. Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1938 in Physics. His work that enabled him to capture the coveted award was for his contributions in induced radioactivity. After he won the award, he made the decision to move to the states. He moved his family to New York. Enrico Fermi worked at Columbia University after moving to the United States. He then worked at the University of Chicago. Enrico Fermi died in 1954. He was only fifty-three years old.

Z Enrico Fermi Biography Enrico Fermi (September 29, 1901 – 29 November 1954) was an Italian-American physicist most noted for his work on beta decay, the development of the first nuclear reactor and for the development of quantum theory. Fermi won the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Honors
Fermi led the construction of the first nuclear pile, which produced the first controlled nuclear chain reaction. He was one of the great leaders of the Manhattan Project.
Fermi is known as the originator of the Fermi paradox in SETI research, when in a discussion of the possibility that intelligent aliens might exist, he famously asked "Where are they?"
Fermions, as well as the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, are named in his honor. In addition, the element fermium and Fermi statistics were named in his honor. The Enrico Fermi US Presidential Award was established in 1956 in memory of Fermi's achievements and excellence as a scientist. The department of the University of Chicago where he used to work is now known as The Enrico Fermi Institute, and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), was also named in his honor.
Fermi problems, such as the classic "How many piano tuners are there in Chicago?" are named after Fermi's use of such estimation problems to teach students the importance of dimensional analysis, approximation methods, and clear identification of assumptions.

A B C D E F G H ... Fermi Enrico Fermi Enrico Fermi was an Italian physicist who investigated the basic structure of the atomic nucleus. He received the 1938 Nobel Prize for physics for making a new radioactive element by neutron ball ardment.
He was a pioneer in the study of nuclear fission (breaking of atoms into parts). He was largely responsible for the achievement of the nuclear chain reaction on December 2, 1942, at the University of Chicago, which made possible the first atomic ball .
Born in Rome, Fermi studied and taught in Italy. He earned his masterate from the University of Pisa and later taught at the universities of Florence and Rome, where he made his NOBEL PRIZE discovery. After receiving the Prize in Stockholm, he came to the United States instead of returning to Fascist-controlled Italy. He was professor of physics at Columbia University before he came to the University of Chicago to work on the atomic pile. He then became associate director of Los Alamos Laboratory, where the atomic ball s were tested. In 1946, he received the Congressional Medal for Merit and returned to Chicago as a member of the Institute for Basic Research.

Fermi, Enrico Fermi, Enrico (1901-1954), Italian-American physicist and Nobel laureate, known for achieving the first controlled nuclear reaction. Born in Rome on September 29, 1901, Fermi was educated at the University of Pisa and in some of the leading centres for theoretical physics in Europe. In 1926 he became professor of theoretical physics at the University of Rome. There he developed a new kind of statistics for explaining the behaviour of electrons. ( See Statistical Mechanics). He also developed a theory of beta decay and, from 1934 on, investigated the production of artificial radioactivity by bombarding elements with neutrons. ( See Nuclear Physics). For the latter work he was awarded the 1938 Nobel Prize in physics.

Fermi, Enrico
