Premio Nobel 1938 "per aver dimostrato l'esistenza di nuovi elementi radioattivi prodotti da bombardamento con neutroni e per la scoperta delle reazioni nucleari indotte da neutroni lenti". Riportiamo un ritratto biografico, redatto nel centenario della nascita del grande scienziato, da Edoardo Amaldi (Carpaneto Piacentino, 5-9-1908 - Roma 5-12-1989), insigne esponente della scuola romana di fisica. Gia' a dieci anni Fermi aveva uno straordinario interesse per la matematica e soprattutto per la fisica, probabilmente stimolato in lui dai discorsi degli amici di suo padre, alcuni dei quali erano ingegneri. Sopo la morte, avvenuta nel 1915, del fratello Giulio, che era anche il suo compagno di giochi, Fermi si lego' di amicizia con un ragazzo di circa un anno piu' vecchio di lui che era stato compagno di scuola di Giulio: Enrico Persico. I due ragazzi avevano in comune la passione della fisica: essi s'incontravano per discutere di problemi scientifici, per fare esperimenti di fisica e scambiarsi idee sui loro studi, che alimentavano andando in cerca, per bancarelle e rivenditori di libri usati, di trattati di matematica e fisica.
