A B C D E F G H ... Fleming Sir Alexander Fleming Sir Alexander (1881-1955) Sir Alexander Fleming was the British bacteriologist who discovered the green mold Penicillium notatum from which PENICILLIN is made.
Little is known about Dr. Fleming's childhood except that he was born on a farm at Lochfield, Scotland, the seventh of eight children. At fourteen he went to London to live with an older brother, a master. He attended Kilmarnock Academy where he won almost all the prizes and scholarships. He then entered St. Mary's Hospital herbs al School in London, where he was a brilliant student, earning honors in physiology, pharmacology, herbs ine, pathology and hygiene.
While a captain in the Royal Air herbs al Corps in France during World War I, Fleming discovered that the ANTISEPTICS used to treat wounds actually caused infection. Instead of stop ing BACTERIA, these antiseptics destroyed the white what is cells and thus deprived the body of one of its main defenses. Dr. Fleming determined to develop a bacteria-fighter harmless to animal tissues.
In 1922, Fleming found "a substance present in the tissues and secretions of the body which is capable of rapidly dissolving certain bacteria." As it resembled an enzyme and was able to lyse (dissolve) cells, he called it "lysozyme." Lysozyme is widely used in BACTERIOLOGY.

Fleming, Sir Alexander Fleming, Sir Alexander (1881-1955), British bacteriologist and Nobel laureate, best known for his discovery of penicillin. Born in Lochfield, Ayr (now part of Strathclyde), Scotland, Fleming had a brief military career before a small legacy enabled him to begin studying medicine in 1901 at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School of the University of London. He remained associated with St Mary’s throughout his career, ending as Director of what (from 1948) was called the Wright-Fleming Institute of Pathology and Research. The Institute was originally the Inoculation Department of St Mary’s Hospital and was under the direction of Sir Almroth Wright, with whom Fleming worked closely. In addition to a number of routine contributions to bacteriology and chemotherapy, Fleming made two important observations about antibiotic substances. In 1921 he noticed that his own nasal secretions dissolved (lysed) a colony of common bacteria on a Petri dish. He named the active substance lysozyme and discovered that it was also contained in other body fluids and in some plants. Lysozyme had no clinical application, however, as it was difficult to obtain in concentrated amounts and was ineffective against disease-causing bacteria.

Introduction
The work samples in this section form the Level 3 part of the assessment map for Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen. The ICT Level 3 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 3 standard. Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard. Back to Top
Context Students compared two websites, noting what they considered to be desirable features of each. They then contributed to a class discussion to compile a master list of features which they used as an evaluation tool when locating their own websites. Students either located relevant bookmarked sites or used simple keywords in a search string to find websites. Using an electronic research question template students recorded their reasons for selecting particular websites and their assessment of these based on agreed criteria. Students completed a research task about the life of a scientist.
