Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item William Francis Giauque (1895-1982), American chemist and Nobel laureate, best known for discovering a method for producing temperatures approaching absolute zero by adiabatic demagnetization. He was a codiscoverer (1929) with Herrick L. Johnston of the oxygen isotopes of mass 17 and 18. Through his research Giauque found an experimental basis for quantum statistics and the third law of thermodynamics . William Francis Giauque wurde am 12. Mai 1895 in Niagara Falls (Kanada) geboren. Giauque wirkte als Professor in Berkeley Kalifornien ) und war an der Entdeckung der Sauerstoff isotope O und O in der Atmosph¤re der Erde beteiligt ( siehe Isotop ). 1933 gelang ihm der experimentelle Nachweis der adiabatischen Entmagnetisierung zur Erzeugung von Temperaturen unter 1 Kelvin ( siehe Tiefsttemperaturtechnik absoluter Temperaturnullpunkt ). F¼r Arbeiten zur chemischen Thermodynamik nahm er 1949 den Nobelpreis f¼r Chemie in Empfang. William Francis Giauque starb am 28. M¤rz 1982 in Berkeley.

Articolo Trova nell'articolo Anteprima di stampa Invia Multimedia 1 elemento Giauque, William Francis (Niagara Falls, Ontario 1895 - Berkeley, California 1982), chimico fisico statunitense, vincitore del premio Nobel per la chimica nel 1949, per gli studi sul comportamento termodinamico delle sostanze alle basse temperature. Laureatosi nel 1922 all’ Universit  della California a Berkeley, divenne professore di chimica nel 1934. La sua attivit  di ricerca si rivolse fin da subito alla verifica sperimentale del terzo principio della termodinamica , attraverso la misura dell’ entropia di diverse sostanze a temperature prossime allo zero assoluto . Giauque dimostr² che, anche a bassissime temperature, le molecole delle sostanze non sono immobili, ma compiono seppur piccoli movimenti, manifestando un’entropia non nulla. Sulla base di questi risultati, mise a punto un nuovo metodo di raffreddamento, detto di smagnetizzazione adiabatica, che gli permise di ottenere temperature di poche frazioni di grado al di sopra dello zero assoluto.
