Greengard wurde am 11. Dezember 1925 in New York geboren. Nach Abschluss seiner Schulausbildung nahm Greengard das Studium der Medizin an der Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore auf. Nach der Graduierung folgte 1953 die Promotion. Von 1953 bis 1959 arbeitete er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der University of London, an der Cambridge University, am National Institute for Medical Research (GroŸbritannien) sowie an den National Institutes of Health in Bethesda (Maryland). Von 1959 bis 1967 leitete er als Direktor das Department of Biochemistry der Geigy Research Laboratories in Ardsley (New York). 1968 erhielt Greengard die Professur f¼r Pharmacology and Psychiatry an der Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven (Connecticut), wo er bis 1983 lehrte. Seit 1983 ist er Professor und Leiter des Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience der Rockefeller University in New York.
